Ben's Bio

Born and raised in the metro Atlanta area, Ben Gunby is definitely the epitome of a hometown fan. His favorite NASCAR driver was Bill Elliott, and his favorite sports teams consist of the four professional franchises in Atlanta, Georgia Tech, Georgia, and Georgia State, as well as the Calgary Flames because they used to play in Atlanta. He's a fan of David Ragan and Reed Sorreson, as well as Davis Love III, David Duval and Stewart Cink. He's also an ardent supporter of his former high school, the Social Circle Redskins. Other teams of interest are usually teams with players who played high school and/or college football in the state of Georgia.

However, he does not limit his sports watching to just the local teams. He's as versed on teams from around the nation as he is with those in his own backyard. He closely follows the NFL, Major League Baseball, NASCAR, College Football and College Basketball. He is also a more than avid fan of golf, and has more than just a passing interest in tennis and the NHL, as well as college baseball. Basically, if it's a sport, he follows it, and follows it on a national scale. As a fan he's been fortunate to witness some pretty big moments in sports, and attend big time sporting events. He's been to the Brickyard 400 and Daytona 500, he's been to NFL and MLB playoff games. He's seen a perfect game thrown and been to the men's SEC tournament, as well as been to the PGA Championship.

Outside of his passion for following sports he (untill health issues have put that on hold for a while) also enjoys playing them. He can be found shooting pool, or playing golf, as well as enjoying pickup basketball games or playing for a local recreational softball team. Outside of the realm of sports he enjoys movies and music of all kinds, as his tastes are definitely rather eclectic. He enjoys cooking as well, as next to the sports networks, Food Network probably ranks as his favorite channel. He loves to experiment in the kitchen.

Ben Writes About

The Short List What Ben thinks about sport's most pressing questions

  • Favorite Athletes

John Smoltz, Chipper Jones, Mark Teixera, Kasey Kahne, Jarrett Jack, Josh Smith, Knowshown Moreno, Keith Brooking and Calvin Johnson

  • Favorite Sports Teams

Atlanta Falcons, Atlanta Braves, Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, Atlanta Hawks, Atlanta Thrashers and my Social Circle Redskins

  • All Time Sports Moment

Game Six of the 1995 World Series

  • Most Memorable Game Attended

Either the 1992 Pepsi 400 where Richard Petty led the first five laps in his final race at Daytona, or the 1992 Hooters 500 at Atlanta, a race all NASCAR fans know the significance of.

  • Most Unbreakable Sports Record

    Richard Petty's 200 wins.

  • Ruth or Mays?

Mays. To me, was a better overall athlete, and Ruth of course played in a league where he only competed against white athletes. Mayes overall game impresses me more.

  • Unitas or Montana?

Give me Montana. His ability to do just what his team needed at all times was uncanny. That and I know more about Montana.

  • Pele or Maradona?

Pele. His impact went beyond the playing field and he had an impact on his sport like few people have ever had, in any sport.

  • Pac 10, Big 12, Big 10, SEC, ACC, or Big East?

It depends on the sport. Football? Is there any question? It's the SEC. Basketball? Traditionaly it's the ACC, but things are weird this season. I'm going to go with the Big 12.
