Choon Yau's Bio

I am a big football fan and my favourite team is Liverpool, once a Red always a Red! Since I'm a massive football fan, I don't just watch the English Premiership. As a result of watching other major leagues, I admire Valencia in Spain, and Juventus and AS Roma in Italy as well. As for international football, I'm not so loyal as my support is spread between four nations; Spain, England, Argentina, and Netherlands (my preference in that order as well).

I never was good in football and I probably never will. But that doesn't stop me from playing the beautiful sport at least once weekly. I used to be a striker (you rarely find a kid not wanting to score goal) but I enjoy playing as a defensive midfielder nowadays, or anywhere in the midfield.

Back then when I was younger, my perspective was "goal is the currency of football; the more you score, the better you are". But soon my perspective widened and I started judging footballers by other qualities as well. And my current favourite footballer is Steven Gerrard. Many say he has a bit of everything but to me, he has a lot of everything; from passing to tackling and from shooting to ball control. More importantly, he is a leader on the pitch and his presence always lifts the whole team up.

The list of footballers I like can go on and on. But the most notable ones are Johan Cruyff, Juan Roman Riquelme, Fernando Torres, Xabi Alonso, Diego Ribas da Cunha, and Jamie Carragher.

The best match I've watched so far is probably the Istanbul night in 2005 where Liverpool overcame a 3-0 deficit at half time to beat AC Milan through penalties. Coming back from three goals down is impressive, but to do that against AC Milan who probably had the strongest defensive line-up in Europe at that time (Cafu, Jaap Stam, Alessandro Nesta, and Paolo Maldini) made things very special.

I hope to visit Anfield and Melwood someday, that's one the main goals of my life in fact. I would like to watch a Merseyside derby and/or a match against Manchester United from the Kop stand of Anfield, singing "You'll Never Walk Alone" with other fans. An European night at Anfield would be a great experience as well. My short term goal to see Liverpool is, however, having the team here in Malaysia for a pre-season match.

Sometimes I do write football stuffs in my blog as well. It is easier to write there because I always have ideas but I am lazy to elaborate them into long articles. Therefore, I write briefly about the latest issues in football there in my blog, http://cruztunn.blogspot.com/

  2. Hey CYT, in what I hope to be a new feature to the site, I've written a comprehensive biography of Juve and France Legend Michel Platini, it's long so I can understand if you don't have the time to look at it but otherwise I'd really appreciate your opinion on it.

Drop by if interested, thanks :)

  7. A few days back you suggested that Christopher Buchtmann should be considered as a rising star of German football and I totally agree with you regarding the fact that he is a very talented footballer. However, since he can play as left-back or a left winger, I was in a bit of a dilemma as to whether I should put him in the list of defenders or midfielders. In the end, I have decided to place him in the midfielders category. Hope I made the right decision....
Anyways, here is the link for the list of defenders
