Hey Nate, thanks for the message.

Regarding Gordon, yes it is definitely possible to get him this offseason, albeit a little tricky. You see, we signed Gordon to an offer sheet when he was a free agent about one year ago in mid-July. There is also a rule in the CBA stating that a team cannot trade for a player they gave an offer sheet to for at least one year. That means that we cannot make a move on draft day, because it will still be a few weeks before one year will have past.

However, we could still make a trade after the draft and during the summer. In this case, we could give the Pelicans anything they want so long as neither team goes over the cap as a result of the trade. In all likelihood, I'd say a trade for Gordon would likely involve both Gortat and Dudley, or possibly a future first-round pick instead. Gortat is our most valuable trade asset and would be an upgrade for the Pelicans over Lopez, and Dudley gives them some leadership and three-point shooting at small forward, something Al-Farouq Aminu can't provide.

Now, would that be worth it for us? It really depends. How bad do we want Gordon given his contracts, and do we trust that he can stay durable and remain a fairly efficient scorer during his time in Phoenix?

If we do decide to trade for him, he will be our primary scoring option. Dragic and Gordon will be the explosive backcourt that we build around, and from there I would imagine the team would start focusing on defense and the big men.

Also consider the fact that getting Gordon would mean the team obviously has no intention of rebuilding the long way. In that case, nothing is stopping us from pursuing top free agents. If we get Gordon, I see no reason as to why we wouldn't also pursue Millsap and Smith at power forward, and possibly Oden or even Bynum (yuck) at center.

And if the team goes into the draft knowing they can trade for Gordon, they may decide not to draft a wing with the fifth overall pick. If we have already made an agreement with the Pelicans to officially make a trade a few weeks after the draft, you can guarantee that the Suns will look at guys like Len and Bennett before Burke, McLemore or Oladipo.
