John's Bio

I have been an editor for several community newspapers in the greater Raleigh area since the mid-1990s, and I was a sports editor at a daily in the area for years prior to that. Between 1998 and 2007, I wrote a sports column every week for some of the papers I worked for. Not doing much in sports these days, but still wish I was.

John Writes About

The Short List What John thinks about sport's most pressing questions

  • Favorite Sports Teams

    Tennessee Vols, Boston Red Sox

  • Favorite Coaches

Bruce Pearl, Pat Summitt, Phil Fulmer

  • All Time Sports Moment

    Miracle On Ice, 1980.

  • Most Memorable Game Attended

Tennessee at Notre Dame football, 1991. Down 31-7 just before half, UT rallies to win 35-34.

  • Most Unbreakable Sports Record

Cy Young and his 511 career victories. Untouchable in the modern game.

  • Ruth or Mays?

The Babe. He hit 714 homers AND went 94-46 as a pitcher. Top that.

  • Unitas or Montana?

Johnny U, but I'd take Otto Graham over both.

  • Jordan or Russell?

    Jordan

  • Gretzky or Orr?

    Gretzky

  • Pele or Maradona?

    Pele

  • Federer or Sampras?

Sampras. Federer doesn't have to beat Andre Agassi every week.

  • Tiger or Nicklaus?

The Golden Bear. Tiger doesn't have to beat anybody most weeks.

  • Petty or Earnhardt?

    Petty

  • Schumacher or Senna?

Senna. The greatest race driver who ever lived. I'll never forget Donington '93. RIP.

  • Pac 10, Big 12, Big 10, SEC, ACC, or Big East?

    SEC, of course.
