Born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana, therefore my sports allegiances are predictable.
In this day of showboating, flashy athletes, I prefer the classy, quiet types. I appreciate and respect hard work on every play, good sportsmanship and those that "act like they've been there before." Not that I don't enjoy and expect passion in sports, but at times it goes overboard. The celebration of sports is something we can all enjoy, but save the major celebrations and dancing for when you're raising the championship trophy, not scoring a garbage time touchdown with your team trailing by 37 points.
So, here's to you Jackie Robinson, Lou Gehrig, Bill Russell, Cal Ripken Jr., Peyton Manning, Barry Sanders and all those that played their sport with class, dignity and respect for those that came before them and the teammates and opponents that played with them.
As for PacMan Jones, Terrell Owens, Randy Moss, Mike Tyson, Tonya Harding, Jack Molinas, Bill Romanowski, Elizabeth Lambert, Gilbert Arenas, John Rocker and many others.....you could all learn a thing or two about how to conduct yourself from watching Drew Brees, my favorite classy athlete.
