Drew's Bio

I'm a journalism student at Northeastern University, and I've worked and written for the Patriot Ledger (Quincy, Mass.) and Concord Monitor (Concord, N.H.). The four sports teams that dominate my life have no geographic similarity, yet can all be defended: The New England Patriots (hometown, Hopkinton, NH), Baltimore Orioles (dad is from Maryland, and my first game was at Camden Yards in August 1995), Miami Heat (I was born and lived near Miami, and when i moved up here, originally wanted to hang on to something from Florida) and the Philadelphia Flyers (first game was a Bruins-Flyers tilt in March 1996, and I was told by a family friend to root for Philly. I complied). My happiest sports moment was Vinatieri's winning kick in XXXVI, the lowest was when Jeffrey Maier...you probably know the rest. I've seen the Heat and Patriots win titles; if the Flyers ever won, I'd riot. If the Orioles ever won, I'd drop to my knees and cry.

  • Favorite Coaches

Bill Belichick, Dave Trembley. And of course: Dennis Green, Jim Mora (Sr.)

  • All Time Sports Moment

Feb. 3, 2002. Super Bowl XXXVI. Take it away Gil: "Snap down, ball on the way, and it is....GOOD! IT'S GOOD! IT'S GOOD! Adam Vinatieri, kicks a 40, 8-yard field goal, and the PATRIOTS are SUPER BOWL CHAMPIONS! The PATRIOTS! Are SUPER...BOWL...CHAMPIONS!" That and Luis Gonzalez's hit in Game 7 of the 2001 World Series.

  • Most Memorable Game Attended

Aug. 10, 2007. Down 5-1 in the eighth, at home, against the eventual world champion Red Sox and their unbeatable bullpen, the Orioles score four in the eighth and one in the ninth. 6-5 victory.

  • Most Unbreakable Sports Record

Cy Young's 511 wins. Put it this way: No one will near Walter Johnson's second-place total of 417. And that's still 94 back.

  • Ruth or Mays?

Mays. The greatest, smartest player to ever play the game. Plus, give Mays his year-and-a-half of military service back, and Aaron chases HIS record.

  • Unitas or Montana?

Unitas. Called his own plays, and was better when the pressure was higher. Can't have a better leader than that. Not to mention, with 47 consecutive games with a TD pass, he could throw a little too.

  • Jordan or Russell?

Jordan. Nothing he couldn't do, or do better when it mattered most.

  • Gretzky or Orr?

Gretzky. No question. His records can't be touched.

  • Pele or Maradona?

    Pele. No handballs allowed.

  • Federer or Sampras?

Federer. Sampras was a winner, but Federer is incredible.

  • Tiger or Nicklaus?

    Tiger. Read above.

  • Petty or Earnhardt?

Earnhardt. Won and scared the crap out of you doing it.

  • Schumacher or Senna?

Schumacher. Check out 2004 Formula One.

  • Pac 10, Big 12, Big 10, SEC, ACC, or Big East?

ACC. It's all about the U

I wrote a piece in May highlighting the position players that I thought should make the all star team. I started a 2-part follow up piece today focusing on starting pitchers. I started with AL. If you get the chance, I'd appreciate it if you took a look at it. Thanks
