About

Like many typical young men, Jim was raised around sports and became an enthusiastic follower of and participant in several. This eventually led to taking on the mens' basketball beat while a student at the University of Calgary, a role he held for three years. That role expanded to include sports editor duties and afforded him the opportunity to cover almost every sport played on campus at one time or another. In his final year, he was awarded a co-editor role, running the paper and moving his writing into more of an ed-op role.

Jim's love of sports has stayed with him and he continues to keep an eye on a number of different sports, from baseball to basketball to curling to hockey. More recently, he has discovered, and become mildly obssessed with, indoor lacrosse and has become an avid supporter of the Calgary Roughnecks of the NLL.

Jim has been coaching baseball locally for 24 years and honestly has no idea what he would do with his summers if he wasn't on a ball diamond terrorising high school age kids.

Writing at the Bleacher Report has also led to an ongoing gig at StadiumJourney.com as their Alberta Regional Correspondent.

Short List

  • Favorite Athletes

Tony Gwynn, Bobby Orr, John Stockton, Geoff Snider, Ryne Sandberg, Ozzie Smith, Ichiro Suzuki, Nolan Ryan, Walter Payton, Gordie Howe, Rickey Henderson, Kaleb Toth, Ken Dryden

  • Favorite Sports Teams

Montreal Canadiens, Calgary Roughnecks, Chicago Bears, San Diego Padres, Los Angeles Dodgers, St. Louis Cardinals, Seattle Mariners, Calgary Flames

  • Favorite Coaches

Gary Howard, former head coach of the U of Calgary Dinos men's basketball team.

  • Most Memorable Game Attended

2009 NLL championship game, watching the hometown Calgary Roughnecks win their second Champion's Cup over the New York Titans.

  • Most Unbreakable Sports Record

Most wins, career: Cy Young - 511. That's close to double what any HoF calibre modern pitcher can ever hope to achieve.

  • Ruth or Mays?

Ruth is third all-time in home runs, first in WAR, first in OPS, first in SLG, second in RBIs, fourth in runs, AND ninth in batting average. Not bad for a guy who was also a HoF level pitcher who racked up 94 wins and a career 2.28 ERA. There is no rational debate against Ruth..

  • Unitas or Montana?

I never saw Unitas play, so I'll have to go with Montana.

  • Jordan or Russell?

I think instead I'll go with the best that ever was -- Wilt Chamberlain. Averaging 50.4 PPG AND 48.5 minutes per game in a season is inconceivable. Going on to be the only center ever to lead the league in assists is at least as impressive.

  • Gretzky or Orr?

Bobby Orr wasn't just the best offensive defenseman ever; he was also one of the best defensive defensemen ever. He was a freaking +124 in '70-'71!

  • Pele or Maradona?

Pele brought world-wide recognition to soccer and was the game's first true superstar. Gotta respect that.

  • Tiger or Nicklaus?

Nicklaus is the king until Tiger starts winning majors again.

  • Schumacher or Senna?

I'm a Ferrari guy, so Schu has a special place in my heart for being the top driver to bring respectability back to the Prancing Horse. But Senna was the best ever.

Thanks for choosing “The Lingering Effects of the Duke Lacrosse Case” as a favorite.

The full story of how an attempt was made to frame innocent players for a crime which never happened, has yet to be told. The real honor belongs to the falsely-accused team, who never gave in to bitternenss or anger, and who have reacted always with a poise and dignity beyond their years. They have been an example to all of us; and hopefully their ordeal may lead to some much-needed reforms.

Eventually, the whole story will come out.
