Hey Ethan! Was wondering if you would consider writing something about a CP3 "Rental/Cap clearing strategy" for the Magic.
Strategy of how Orlando could move to get Paul or Deron in a Magic uniform. It is based on rumors (basically that Paul would only resign with the Knicks), but I think it is worth at least pondering:
Chris Paul made it quite clear he will not sign with any other team except the Knicks.
This might actually be a good thing to the MAGIC's and here is why:
Paul's unwillingness to sign with any other team simply diminishes his trade value this season (which other team would trade to much for a guy leaving the next season? He might be a good rental though for a team as Orlando).
I think Orlando could strategically make an offer consisting of Jameer, Reddick and Bass for Paul, and maybe even Turk for Okafur as well, without asking for Paul's extension. This is a better package than Billups and Fields (which is the only thing the Knicks can offer right now and after all why would they offer more knowing they have Paul in his hands after next season).
Why would Orlando do it? 2 reasons: A. Showing Paul and Howard how much they can accomplish together might be enough to convince them to stay and resign to a deal that would allow the Magic to add pieces to the team (e.g. Miami model). B. In case Paul decides that he should still play with his pal Carmelo, well, what the Magic basically would have done in such a case, is freeing up cap space for the 2012/13 season, which paired with Arenas amnesty, would drastically put them under the cap and allow them to make a push towards Howard and Deron. It is risky (Orlando could end up with nothing, not even picks in a loaded lottery) and bold, but could actually work!!
