Near Misses: Venus at the 2008 US Open
11/17/2009
I am a professional scientist.
I study comets and the planets. I have done work on Jupiter and Saturn. I have a special fondness for the largest moon in the solar system: Ganymede (a moon of Jupiter). To support my work, I have degrees from UC Berkeley, UCLA, and the University of MIchigan. So of course I support those teams! The only conflict I have is when UCLA and UM face each other in the Rose Bowl. Then, all I'll say is that I wear Blue and Gold.
When I was a student at UM, I used to foxhunt with the Battle Creek Hunt (we never caught the fox - that was not the point!). As a result of that I have an interest in equestrian hunting and cross-country events. I have a life-long interest in horse racing. I am priveliged to live near the historic Santa Anita racetrack (where Seabiscuit used to race).
I travel quite a bit for business. I have been lucky enough to go to Wimbledon once and see Pete Sampras. I have also been to Indian Wells, and hopefully Queens Club this summer. I have a life-long interest in tennis. Some of my earliest memories are of Arthur Ashe in the 70s, and John McEnroe facing Borg in the 80s.
"3) 2009 French Open Quarter-Final
Rafael Nadal had never lost at Roland Garros. His opponent in the QF was one whom he rather famously disliked on the tour, and to whom he had administered a drubbing 2-and-1 on clay just a few weeks before. "
Correct me if I am wrong. I think its 4th Round and not QF and the previous weeks drubbing is 1-and-0 and not 2-and-1. Otherwise, its still excellent.

Hi Claudia, how are you?
Thanks for the link to your "Competitive Cojones" article. Sorry that I am just now getting to it but I thoroughly enjoyed it. I see you have written 3 articles in the interim, and I will make it a point to read them soon.
I also appreciate your note on my BB. My mom ended up having a mastectomy, so it's been a rough couple of months. On top of that, my wife has had a laundry list of issues lately, with her asthma (3 attacks in one month, 5 now this year after she had had only 2 in the first year and a half that I knew her), liver and spleen. So I've not been very active here on B/R of late, but I hope to return to a more prominent level of participation again soon.
Thanks again for the concern! Keep your eyes open, I'll be around, I'm sure! ;-)

This is for Long. Hope you can wish him well by commenting.
It was to be my first collaboration with him, but he's had to go. You can imagine what a contrasting piece he had drafted!

Your Lenglen piece isn't showing the right photo for me. Don't know if it's my computer or the B/R system, but you may want to take a quick look.
Great article!

DeleteThanks for sharing your experience, Claudia! My mom has been remarkable - her attitude so upbeat - and I have generally become able to adopt a similar tenor.
I'm hoping my wife turns around soon, at which time I can perhaps return to some semblance of order.
