Stew's Bio

I am a life-long Boston sports fan – I was raised on Larry Bird and the Boston Celtics. I remember spending many a Saturday afternoon as a little kid, listening to my dad’s Celtics Pride records (yes, records) about the Celtics of the 1960s. I listened to Johnny Most’s call of Havlicek stole the ball so often, I could easily imagine that I was there myself. I attended the final Celtics game in the Boston Garden, a 1995 playoff loss to Shaq and the Orlando Magic, and I was in attendance for every home playoff game in 2002 when the C’s made a run to the Eastern Conference finals behind Antoine Walker, Paul Pierce, and a group of players whose sum was far greater than their individual parts. Then Paul Gaston dismantled the team, and the Celtics fell into irrelevancy until the arrival of KG this past summer. I remember the 1985 Patriots’ playoff run, getting “Squish the Fish,” “Bury the Bears” and “Defrost the Fridge” t-shirts. I also can remember many a Sunday sitting in front of the television, only to see that the Patriots weren’t on because of a local blackout when they failed again to sellout their home game. These were days many Patriots fans of today don’t remember – before Bob Kraft, Bill Parcells and Drew Bledsoe turned around a franchise, raised expectations and paved the way for the Bill Belichik and Tom Brady Patriots of today. When I was really young, I loved baseball and wanted to be a catcher (due mostly I think to watching The Baseball Bunch on Saturday mornings) until being one of the worst little league players in the history of little league caused a falling out of sorts between the game and myself. I still followed the Sox, but not nearly like I did the Celtics and Patriots. That was until going to college in Boston in the mid-1990s, going to as many games as I could, and falling back in love with the team, the park and the sport.

Every Fenway Park Pedro Martinez start between 1998 and 2002 that I was able to attend (and I did my best to be at as many as possible).

Ruth or Mays?

Mays

Unitas or Montana?

Montana - I am a little young to remember Unitas, but to me, Montana is the best QB I have ever watched.

Pele or Maradona?

Pele - I never really got into soccer, but I will always remember Pele's bicycle kick from Victory (and trying to do it, and of course failing miserably, when I was a youngster).

Jordan or Gretzky?

This is a copout, but I'd have to say equal. They both are considered the greatest ever in their respective sport, and they both were larger than life away from the game itself.

Pac 10, Big 12, Big 10, SEC, ACC, or Big East?

SEC - top to bottom in both basketball and football, the best conference.
