Definitely trying to get there. Let's share a pint, shall we?
Hi Ben,
I am a baseball blogger and am looking to start a brand new site with a large group of writers. We have a few great writers already on board and we are looking for more to join in. Please let me know if you're interested, even if you are only able to write an article per week.
Please contact me if you're interested UpAlongFirst@Gmail.com
Thanks!
Hey, thanks for the read and for the praise. Both greatly appreciated.
Thanks for reading and enjoying my article, Benjamin. I'd like to see the Whalers back in the NHL too. I even signed an on-line petition to that effect. (Have you signed a petition?) The problem is that Hartford has taken far fewer steps than either Quebec and Winnipeg to solve the two main stumbling blocks to getting its team back, an investor and a proper NHL arena. Winnipeg did both by first building a (small) arena that was just enough for the NHL to accept and then found first class investors in Chipman and Thomson.
In Quebec's case, the fans took matters into their own hands by starting a petition that got 80,000 signatures asking for the Nordiques back. Once politicians and investors became aware that this kind of sentiment existed, then things began to happen. The mayor and eventually the Premier of Quebec were won over to supporting a returned Quebec franchise. Then when Quebecor tried and failed to buy the Montreal Canadiens, it turned its attention to the Quebec problem and agreed to front a bid. Now municipal and provincial money are being made available to build the new arena and it looks as though Quebec will back in the NHL soon once the NHL sees the arena built or maybe even earlier if they see the shovels in the ground.
Hartford needs to start taking practical steps itself. In 2010, Bettman made a grand tour of all the cities whose franchises got removed in the 1990s and privately told the mayors that the price of readmission to the NHL is a proper NHL arena and a bid fronted by first class investors. If you are really keen about bringing back the Whalers, try and contact Howard Baldwin and see what you can do to help. I've written two other articles about Hartford, one just about the Whalers, and an early article in conjunction with the other lost cities. You might want to check them out in my archives.
