It all started at a 1000 watt radio station in Sylacauga, AL, on the air when I was 16. Playing football on the State Championship team at SHS and walking on at Mississippi State proved to separate me from my rotator cuff, but I'd do it all again because I love the game. Working in TV/Radio news at Channel 13 in B'ham and subsequent gigs in news and sports from Huntsville to Philadelphia to Minneapolis and back honed my writing skills and there are a lot of mentors that helped with that along the way. In my early 20s I used to tag along with Gary Sanders, the voice of the Auburn Tigers, just to help with the radio broadcast. Didn't get paid, but I was in the press box working with the Auburn Network, so it was fine with me. Tom Roberts, currently with the Crimson Tide Network, taught me a lot about writing.
I love other sports, but have a passion for football. Alabama high school and SEC football are my passions and I know the game pretty well at this point, so I hope you keep reading.
Great stuff Russ and War Eagle!
It was an excellent piece grounded in the facts of the game.
I did not know him well, but actually witnessed his impact on friends while at Auburn. It was a great piece, I hope you continue to enlighten us all with your hard work.
