onezuke18's Bio

I'm here to present logic in an ESPN-illogical age of sports, which has lost its substance and ethical reality and dove head freaking first into irrational biased entertainment. I give you truth whether you like it or not. No Mark May slant, destroying Pat Forde angles, and torpedoing Tom Luginbill agendas, just a cold hard look at Ohio State football. That said, I'm happy to be here at Bleacher Report, and am even more priviledged to have the opportunity to present my thoughts to a great group of dedicated fans and hope that I will build a relationship with many of you through the exchange of ideas on this site.

  8. Hiya,

Sure, I get that the article was a proposal, but I think an intro paragraph is critical to any piece. But that's just me and I'm old and cranky.

I'm not much of a college football fan. Actually, check that, I'm not a college football fan AT ALL. Autumn Saturdays in my life are for the Red Sox, coaching youth soccer and yardwork. But I saw a number of things in your proposal that raised my eyebrows, so here goes:

First off, eliminating games between Bowl Subdivision and (D-1) and Championship Subdivision (1-AA) teams would just about kill 1-AA football. Many of those programs rely on revenue from those D-1 games to balance their budgets. I know my own state university's 1-AA team would shrivel up and die without that money. For that reason, I think the NCAA would put the kibosh on that proposal straight away.

The other problem is the conference realignment. Duke and Maryland will NEVER leave the ACC. They're charter members and they would never consent to moving their basketball programs, which drive the bus at those two schools. (Can you even envision separating Duke and North Carolina?) And the NCAA won't allow schools to play football in one D-1 conference and basketball in another. Further, Colorado would never leave the Big 12 for a smaller league. Northwestern would never leave for a non-BCS conference. The Big East will never take Boston College back -- that bridge is burned. And Notre Dame has no incentive to join a football conference and the BCS has no interest in forcing it to. So you're stuck with the conferences the way they're set up now.

That doesn't mean you can't have a college football playoff but you have to do it within the existing framework. And there's the rub.

One last thing: Who's going to pony up $25 million to sponsor a college football game? There's a pretty nasty recession going on. The CEO who tried that would be unemployed faster than you can say BCS.

One more last thing: You must be fairly young. I know this by your answer to the Gretzky or Orr question. Anyone old enough to have seen Bobby play knows the correct answer to that question.

    Cheers!

    -- Matt McSorley

  9. I realized the BCS is better than a play-off, and decided it needed to be defended. I'd love your input.
