Mike's Bio

I'm a professor of journalism and English at Glendale CC in suburban Phoenix, AZ. I advise the student newspaper, The Voice, and I teach composition to non-J majors.

I also am on the Core Faculty at Western International University in Phoenix, where I teach English Comp., World Lit,, Organizational Behavior, Critical Thinking and the Undergraduate Capstone course.

I began writing sports at the University of Miami in the 1970s as an intern at The Miami Herald, where my beat was south Dade County high school athletics. From there I became PR Director at the Int'l. Swimming Hall of Fame in Fort Lauderdale. I also coached age group swimming because I was a better coach than competitor.

After graduate school in Syracuse, I went to work for the University, writing articles for the athletic department and for Carrier Dome game programs and yeabooks. That gig got me my biggest sportswriting break: writing "Syracuse University Football: A Centennial Celebration." It was a coffee-table sized book celebrating the football program's first 100 years (1889-1989). Boy, did I cop some cool interviews (alas, not the gifted Ernie Davis).

I spent time briefly as SID at a two-year school in the SUNY system. There I got to promote the winningest program and coach in the history of NJCAA ice hockey: The Canton College Northstars and Terry Martin.

Which brings me back to the desert, the classroom and Bleacher.
