About

Leo Rizzuti grew up in the farmlands of North Carolina, learning at an early age that hard work will keep you young, if you are not actively learning you are actively becoming dumber, and that life is too short to spend it complaining. Having served in the Marine Corps, he is fiercely patriotic and loyal to his country. He is a family man, a passionate Christian (who was once an atheist), a writer/humorist, an artist, a businessman, a news junkie and an American-American -no hyphens allowed. He believes that Reagan is the greatest President in the last 100 years, the New York Yankees, not the Dallas Cowboys, are truly America's team, barbecue is best in Raleigh, NC and that Dean Smith is the single most overrated coach in the history of organized sports - including that drunk that coached your little league baseball team when you were 11. In other words, Leo Rizzuti is a man for all seasons.

And he is extraordinarily modest.

Short List

  • Favorite Athletes

Lou Gehrig, Ty Cobb, Jim Thorpe, Babe Zaharius, Larry Bird, Darryl Green, Bill Russell, Shawn Michaels, Kurt Angle, Jack Nicklaus, Ben Hogan, Bobby Jones,

  • Favorite Sports Teams

Washington Redskins, Pittsburgh Steelers, New York Yankees, Boston Celtics, Boston Bruins, NC State Wolfpack, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Pittsburgh Penguins,

  • Favorite Coaches

Bill Cowher, Red Aurbach, Vince Lombardi, Joe Gibbs, Bill Walsh, Doc Rivers, Joe Torre, Dick Sheridan, Joe Paterno,

  • All-Time Sports Moment

Though not an actual sports moment, Lou Gehrig's retirement speech must be regarded as one of the iconic moments in American history, much less in sports. For an actual sports moment, the two greatest moments that stick out in my mind are Jack Nicklaus winning the Masters in 1986 or NC State winning the NCAA Championship in 1983, mostly because I witnessed both of them.

  • Most Memorable Game Attended

1988 Orange Bowl: #2 Miami (Coached by Jimmy Johnson) vs. #1 Oklahoma (Coached by Barry Switzer). Miami won 20 - 14 in a classic matchup between two geniuses of college football.

  • Most Unbreakable Sports Record

Joe DiMaggio's 56 game hitting streak and Byron Nelson's 11 consecutive tournament wins (not neccessarily in that order).

  • Ruth or Mays?

Babe Ruth. Really, is that even a question?

  • Unitas or Montana?

Johnny Unitas. Even though Montana came from Notre Dame, Unitas' haircut will always win in the end.

  • Jordan or Russell?

Bill Russell. Jordan never had to play against Wilt Chamberlain, and Bill still won almost twice as many rings.

  • Gretzky or Orr?

    Bobby Orr.

  • Pele or Maradona?

Not that I care, but Pele. The first man to be deserving of only one name.

  • Federer or Sampras?

Neither. This question should correctly read "Conners or MacEnroe," in which case my heart would say "MacEnroe" but my mind would scream "Conners," if only for marrying a Playmate of the Year. Well done, sir.

  • Tiger or Nicklaus?

Nicklaus, although Tiger is the more superior athlete.

  • Petty or Earnhardt?

Petty. And I may be the only person from the south who fails to see the fascination of watching someone make 400 left-hand turns.

  • Schumacher or Senna?

    Schumacher. By a nose.

  • ACC, Big 12, Big East, Big Ten, Pac-12 or SEC?

    ACC and Notre Dame.
