Dan 's Bio

I'm a north suburban (Chicago) Deerfield native. Lifelong Cubs fan, whose first favorite player was Ivan DeJesus.
Wore #11 every year I ever played baseball because of him.
Wrote free-lance, on and off, for the Daily Herald for seven years, before getting my first full-time gig at a little paper in northern Wisconsin. Was a literal one-man sports department.
Now am working at a slightly larger paper in southern, central Florida, where at least I have a couple of correspondents.

The Short List What Dan thinks about sport's most pressing questions

  • Favorite Athletes

Of all time? Walter Payton, Michael Jordan, Jackie Robinson, Ted Williams. Currently? I'm souring on D-Lee, liking A-Ram and loving Geo.

  • Favorite Sports Teams

Cubs, Bulls, Bears and now that I'm in Florida and they're so compelling, the Rays

  • All Time Sports Moment

Personally, either scoring four touchdowns ina game in eighth grade, or having five hits in a game in high school.

  • Most Memorable Game Attended

Either the second game of the '84 playoffs, the last game the Cubs won that year, the official second night game at Wrigley or the night Jordan broke his foot in his second season.

  • Most Unbreakable Sports Record

Dimaggio's hitting streak, and nobody will hit .400 again.

  • Ruth or Mays?

This is tough, because Mays was THE true five-tool player, but Babe was both the greatest slugger and was a top pitcher. But I'll go Mays.

  • Unitas or Montana?

Unitas, played in such a tougher era, and modernized the QB position.

  • Jordan or Russell?

Jordan. Another close one, with all Russell's rings, and how they could both impose their will on a game. But Jordan could do more and won in a more competitive era.

  • Gretzky or Orr?

I lean toward the tougher era, with Bobby, but Wayne was so dominant, he get's the nod.

  • Pele or Maradona?

    Pele all the way.

  • Federer or Sampras?

    Federer

  • Tiger or Nicklaus?

    Tiger

  • Petty or Earnhardt?

    Petty

  • Schumacher or Senna?

Not even sure who they are, but I'll go for Senna, for no particular reason.

  • Pac 10, Big 12, Big 10, SEC, ACC, or Big East?

I'm a midwesterner, so of course Big 10

  1. Thanks for the read and the comment, Dan. I think you're right about readers (and therefore writers) following the hot story...but sometimes you've got to take a traffic hit to make your point. At least I know I can make up for it next week by writing about Jessica Simpson.

    Best,

    RA

  2. Haha.....know that bar story....that's cool :)

  3. That's pretty sweet....it must be really interesting to watch those guys go through the college ranks and make it big. We've got kind of the same thing with junior hockey here, but for some of those guys it takes them a little longer to get to the NHL sometimes.

Litsch has had kind of an up-and-down year, but I'm really hoping he can have some consistent success at the pro level for the Jays. It'd be a big plus for the pitching staff.

  4. Newfie jokes are always the best! Haha besides, I took a chance on the hockey seeing as you've had to run your own sports section. No worries though, the Cubs still have Reed Johnson and the fact that Jason Marquis held them to one hit going into the eighth against the Jays last time they came to town, so we can try and talk ball....although the Jays don't give me much to talk about :) haha.

I'll definitely check out the site!

  5. Hey Dan! Welcome to BR!

Thanks a lot for the comments on the article. With such a shocking turn of events, it's interesting to see the different takes around the continent (I'm from Canada....so I have to say continent :)) on the issue. If you need any help, feel free to contact me, especially if you've got any NHL tidbits stored up in that head of yours!

  6. Welcome to BR. As the Cubs community leader, let me know if I can be of any help to you.

Nice work on your first article. Make sure you get involved by also reading others' work and commenting too. We need to start generating some debate among the community.

But Ivan DeJesus? Seriously Dan? Wow, I hated that guy. You know it was rumored that he would refuse to apply the tag at second on steal attempts against other Latin ballplayers. But he was good for one thing: he was traded to the Phillies for Ryne Sandberg and Larry Bowa.

Best of luck to you and look forward to your next piece!
