Daniel's Bio

As a native Bavarian, Daniel is focused on topics surrounding German football. He grew up in a family addicted to the sport. His grandfather played on the highest level, his father is a coach and referee, his mother used to play and so does his sister. Unfortunately, Daniel had to stop playing the game himself after his ACL tore for the 2nd time.
Besides, he has great interest in Eastern European football and the development of "soccer" in the United States. As an upcoming lawyer, he doesn't have ambitions to become a journalist himself, but regards Bleacher Report as an opportunity to practize his English language skills which have suffered since the days he has left high school. HE HAS NEVER LIVED IN AN ENGLISH-SPEAKING COUNTRY AND IS THUS VERY GRATEFUL FOR EDITORS WHO TAKE THE TIME TO REVISE HIS ARTICLES. Furthermore, he wants to share his passion for the sport with writers and readers from around the globe.

He also publishes an "International Press Review" for the German magazine "spox" on a weekly basis in which he showcases articles from all over the world to German readers.

  1. I would also agree about Russian football. Right now, many clubs are being carried by their owners. But many things are changing. More young kids are starting to play football, and as you pointed out, many new stadiums. Look at Kazan for example. Rubin has never been a good team until now, and the fans are starting to go to games. With Zenit, our stadium is holding us back for the moment. We used to play at the 40,000 seat Kirov and fill that, but now the Petrovsky only can seat 21,000. But the new area will be done soon, hopefully 2011.

I know you're a fan of Krasnodar, Zenit played them today. Yes we won 2-0, but I'm very surprised that Kuban did not score. We had 3 of our starting 4 defenders out with illness. But maybe more impressive were their fans. They're in relegation territory now but still had a great crowd to support them.

  2. It's been that way for some time, the activity feed doesn't work. I have no idea why.

We were a bit nervous also, but confident playing at home too. I was most concerned about Zhirkov to be honest, he was only now coming off an injury and was playing his first full game since August. But it was just a matter of execution on simple plays. On your goal, we got too fancy in our own zone and it cost us. Kerzakov was awful in finishing, as I'm sure you noticed. He's one of those players that can be painfully effective against smaller countries but fall apart on the bigger stage. He was awful for Dinamo against Zenit in the match before qualifiers and I'm still not sure why he started. I know Pav hasn't played and Pascha is more a second half sub, but still. Both are better finishers.

I don't think we have to worry about goalkeeping for some time with Akinfeev in net, but our concern is in the midfield. We do have some strong players. But Semshov, Zyryanov, and Semak are all getting older and this will probably be their last bow. I wouldn't anticipate any playing at Euro 2012, they will all be 35 or older.

I'm a little worried about the playoff now. I don't know who to hope for. I don't want to see the Ukraine because they're our archrivals and anything can happen in rivalry games. We'll find out tomorrow.

  3. First of all, congratulations on the excellent victory and qualifying for South Africa! That took a lot of heart and skill to win at Luzhniki with only 10 men. We had not lost a competitive match there in 11 years before you won.

Although I know we had our fair share of chances, it came down to finishing. You finished your chance and we couldn't put one in and at least salvage a draw. But that's just how it goes. A draw wouldn't have mattered anyway, Germany wasn't going to lose to Finland if it was a must-win game.

But as our national program grows, hopefully we will have many great matches in the future as well. Both Germany and Russia have a lot of young talent coming along. I was very impressed with Adler, he is a superb keeper. I would feel very comfortable him between the posts in the future.

Although, I'm not sure how we fell from 6th to 12th. But still. We need to go through the playoffs but at least we're back to full health.

    We'll meet you next summer!

  5. Hey Daniel,

Just seen Manchester United are linked heavily with Manuel Neuer.

Because your the expert on the German league, I was hoping you might give some insight into his abilities.

    Thanks again,

    Keith

  7. No worries about proof-reading. Saint Petersburg is a large city, so there are a lot of places he could be from. Bremen is not all that far from home for him, certainly much closer than it is for me anyway. When I made the journey in May, it took almost 18 hours of travel. But 4 different airports later, I at least made it!

Fenerbahce fans can be very radical, from my limited experience. Why were they all behind Lepescu, because of his Romanian lineage? I was happy to see Shakhtar win, I'm not so sure you were though. I don't think Beck will receive a chilling reception from the Luzhniki faithful, unless he scores a goal. Then it may get interesting. Our defense I think will be fine, if they field Ignashevich-Anyukov-Kolodin. Guus only played three backs against Finland at it worked out well, Zhirkov and Denisov defend nicely in the midfield.

By what definition is Beck extremely German in his attitudes? Only wondering. It's strange to think that he comes from Kemerovo.

  8. Thanks for the POTD vote, Daniel!

    Anthony Emerson

  9. It's always appropriate to have some hope before a big match. I had a lot of hope before the match in Dortmund also. But we got behind early and that is never a good thing. I also think having all of our normal starters back will help. Yanbaev started that match, Pav wasn't available and Pogrebnyak played the full 90. But that would be very interesting if Beck was in the starting XI. I wonder how the Luzhniki crowd would respond. It would also be nice to see if Alan Dzagoev gets into the game, two very talented young players. But I'm not too sure of his chances.

Yes I know of Russian Germans, do you know what part of St. Petersburg your friend is from? There are not many from the city who don't support Zenit. It's the only team for a city of 4.5million. Like him, I don't live there any more. I moved to the US in 1998 so I have had the opportunity to learn and practice English all the time. But I still make a trip back to Russia at least once a year.

  10. Well, I guess we will have to see how it goes. In all chances, that match in Moscow will decide the winner of group 4. I just can't see us or Germany losing before then, but that's why they play the matches. Anyway, I love the announcer and that was an incredible moment for us at Euro but he can be incredibly biased.

Sorry I don't know very much German. Maybe I will pick up a few words here and there but I certainly can't speak it..
