  I just read your wonderful piece on the sociology of the Duke/UNC rivalry. I was born in Louisville, KY and my family moved to WI very shortly after the UK/U of L NCAA tournament game in 1983. I was 10 and never really understood why I was supposed to be opposed to either my friend (A UK fan) or my Dad (A U of L fan.) That day was traumatic for me and beautifully underscores your article that such sports nonsense can turn family and friends against each other for silly reasons. My Dad to this day talks to me about hating KY hoops every time I talk to him (I've been a U of L fan for a long time.) As the Cards competed heavily with Duke and UNC in the 80's, I always disliked these two programs but feel now I have a much better understanding of what makes them tick.
