Who's better UGA or SCAR??
uat may not have any trees, especially after 4/27, but there are a few statues that could use some work.
The problem with uat and claiming mythical NCs is that uat claims championships retroactively years later based on some obscure and unrecognized measure. For example, uat claims an NC in a year in which they share a title with 3 other teams with equal or better records. In 1941 uat was ranked 20th by the AP with 14 teams having better records in the top 20. Again, like with the 1934 title, which incidentally was awarded 12 years later in 1946, it is the Football Thesaurus that retroactively awards it. The what? uat finished 3rd in the SEC that year. In 1964 uat lost the bowl game finishing 10-1 but Arkansas won their bowl finishing 11-0 yet uat claims a title; In 1965 there were three teams with better records than uat: uat 9-1-1, Michigan St 10-1-0, Arkansas 10-1-0, Nebraska 10-1-0 yet uat claims a title. In 1973, the AP puts uat 4th after their bowl game loss but uat claims an NC from the UPI poll that was taken before they met Notre Dame in the bowl game and lost. Like 1965, there were 3 teams with better records than uat that year. The embarrassment of naming uat number one caused the UPI to name champions after bowl games. In 1978 the AP gives this to uat (11-1-0) even though USC (12-1-0) had the better record. One guess who uat lost to that year? USC. UPI gave it to USC.
I could name more but I believe the point is made. But do not let it be said I will not render unto Ceasar what is Ceasar's: in the BCS era uat has reigned supreme and may continue to do so until satan is forced out.
You can see why people ridicule uat fans when they talk about 16 NCs. The early ones were awarded by individuals years after the games were played. These weren’t consensus polls but NCs awarded by people that had their own formula for determining champions. A geologist? Really? Some NCs were given before bowl games that uat lost. Using uat logic, Auburn could claim at least four, maybe five national championships. But when Bammers brag they like to say they have 16 and Auburn has one and that’s 2010. How silly. You can’t find an Auburn site claiming four national championships but there are plenty of uat sites claiming sixteen.
I will be the first to say uat has been, is and will continue to be a great football team but this annoying habit of claiming all these titles when it is so easily debunked and proven to be illogical makes people like me dislike uat even more. Argue all you want, but the truth is there if you can look objectively and that is the major problem with most uat fans: arrogance, conceit, and an inability to accept truth.
Here's hoping for an honorable and adult discourse.
