About Richard »

Philadelphia fan - Eagles, Phillies, Flyers, 76ers.
Syracuse University fan
Favorite sport - scuba diving. Favorite TEAM sport - Football. Favorite team sport to play - beach volleyball

Somehow, I married into a Giants family. I live in Giants/Mets/Yankees land. It is disconcerting and difficult, but I thrive on this. I cannot say enough about Philly fans - they are the most knowledgeable about sports that I've met, but they fail in one respect: they have too many controversial sports editorialists who engage in too much barstool logic. Giants fans, on the other hand, tend to be too parochial. Comparing the two fan bases, I've decided there is little difference. Philly fans get a bad rap, which is usually based on the misguided concept that they "booed Santa". There's more to the story, of course....but that doesn't matter to people with a stilted POV. Giant fans, however, are known for throwing iceballs and batteries at players and refs. Philly fans are vocal, even against their own team when it plays poorly. Giants fans are, too. Philly was the first stadium to install a court. The Giants SHOULD have installed one.

Today, however, I feel for Giant fans. The price tag for their new stadium, being built by a billionaire but funded by season ticket holders, is excessive and will alienate the true fans. They will find that the cost of attending a game is better used buying a big screen plasma and watching at home. Alas, my family, used to attending Giant/Eagle games in NY for the last 18 years, has only a few years left....I'll miss those games.

    Damn, Richard,

An Eagles fan and a Delt. It is my lucky day. BTW, Delta Tau Delta was founded at Bethany, my alma mater. Like it matters, huh? I went with brothers out to the Bethany part of Karnea this past August.

I met a few Phillies in my time: Gary Maddox (a great guy), Mike Schmidt (OK guy), I think Tug (good guy) and Del Unser (good guy). There were a few jerks, mainly Rod Reed and Nino Espinosa (maybe he didn't speak English). My buddy, who now is a cameraman for WCAU 10-Philadelphia) and another friend would go to the Stadium Club for some games. We would sit at the bar and my buddy knew that if we waited 45 minutes until after the game, we could take the elevator downstairs, meet some players and get autographs.

Schmidt, we were on the elevator with him. He was cool and gave autographs.

One night, I was sitting on the curb outside the Vet with my buddy, when Garry Maddox came walking out with some of his family. My buddy prodded me and I said: "Mr. Maddox, can I get your autograph." He said something and it took me a second to realize it was not some smart alerk answer. "Sure," Maddox said. "If you walk with me to my car." I did and sure enough, he signed "Best wishes, Garry Maddox." Another young kid was waiting, also, he was about 10 and Maddox asked him his name, which he wrote with his autograph. Probably one of the most gracious athletes I ever met.

Roxie is Donovan's wife, who also went to SU.

Two of my brother-in-laws are Giants fans. Two fraternity brothers of mine (Bethany College, Bethany, W.Va. Div. III and I am a Delta Tau Delta) are Mets fans.

I don't find my Giants relatives or BR reporters to be so bad, but the Mets fans are one jeolous bunch. Not my frat brothers, but they do laugh when the Phillies lose, one of them at least.

Admittedly, one of the most beautiful days in my life as a Phillies fan was the last day of the regular season 2007. By the time the Phillies-Nationals started their game, the Mets were already losing 7-2 or something like that. When the Phils won the East and the Mets were shut out, well, it was an unbelievable feeling of joy.

The WS championship was a thing of beauty, too. The Eagles handled the Giants Game 2 this year, so your dinner probably tasted good that night - that is if your wife even cooked after the game.

    Go Eagles!

If you like the Eagles and Syracuse, you have to be a big McNabb fan! Did you follow girls volleyball? I think that was Roxie's sport at Syracuse.

    Either way: Go Eagles!

Two of my brother in laws are Giants fans.

I can't imagine family dinners at your house during football season.
