Hollis's Bio

I graduated from college with a BS in chemistry in May of 2007, and it has been all downhill from there (okay not really...I get a nice paycheck once a month and don't have to pull my hair out over lab reports, papers, and exams like I did back in college for free). In between getting used to the normal Monday-Friday 8-5 grind as a chemist, I enjoy spending my time watching sports at all levels: professional, college, and high school, either in person or on television. As an opinionated person (correction: VERY opinionated), I have maintained a sports blog of some type for three years, covering the sports I love, specifically the NFL, college football, MLB, college basketball, and last but certainly not least, NASCAR.

After "picking" the Cowboys and Braves to be my favorite teams as a child growing up in the carefree days of the 90s, probably largely in part because they were good year in and out at the time, I've been suffering through some lean years. Dallas hasn't won a playoff game in 12 years (I still remember that dominating victory over Minnesota), while I had to sit and suffer through a 90-loss season by the Braves in 2008. Making matters worse, two hated rivals, the Phillies and Giants, are currently on top of their respective sport's world. So if I appear testy at times, you'll know the reason why lol. Hey it could be worse: at least I'm not a Cubs fan.

I never played competitive sports growing up, so it is probably somewhat surprising that they take up 90% of my time in some shape or form outside of work. But there is something about the competition that draws me in closer with each and every passing day. And there is no greater escape after a rough day or week than kicking back and watching the game or race.

Feel free to drop by and read my periodic ramblings, opinions, and ideas. You won't regret taking the time to do so, and I would greatly appreciate it. I have a habit of complaining a lot in my articles, so please don't take it the wrong way. I'm just a 23-year old that bypassed healthy adulthood straight for old age hahaha.

  1. Hollis...where the hell are you?

  2. Should turbochargers return to the 2011 IndyCar Series?

  3. Hey Hollis,

If you haven't already join the truck series community and hope you keep writing about the series.

Do you play Fantasy Racing? If so, me and Adam are trying to get a group of people together for a Bleacher Report Members only league.

I've created one on FoxSports.com called Bleacher Report Members, the password is bleacher01 if you are interested in joining. If so, see-ya there! And feel free to spread the word!

  5. Hey man.
Could you let me know your
    email?
    Thanks in advance.

    Cheers!

  6. Hello, Hollis. You may be interested in a piece I just published. It's an interview I did today with Bob Varsha of SPEED TV about the 24 Hours of Daytona. Hopefully they'll post up the audio of it soon.

    Regards,
    Adam Amick

  7. Hey, I noticed a note about wanting to be included in a weekly pick thing?

If you'd like to be included, I have Mary Jo, Kelly, S.M. and L.G. and myself, if you are interested, shoot me an e-mail galaxhokie@gmail.com

I'll add you to our circle and we can have 6 writers that do it...

My plans are to have everyone email their predictions (no limit on drivers or rules on picking the same drivers) by like Thursday or Friday, then I'll compile it all together and post the story Friday or Saturday...

Then I'm going to have a spreadsheet where I point the points each writer's driver earns that week... and a spot to keep track of how many wins we get... then we are going to reset the points according to wins once we get to the Chase...

Also, I'm doing a preview of all the top-35 teams in NASCAR, I am down to 19 left to go... I do a thing every morning telling about the team, their sponsors, any news related and their predictions, so it'll be fun to have someone to talk with back and forth about it...

Let me know if you want to be in our weekly picks group... the more people we have, the better...

    -Ben

  8. Hollis - I think your pre-season rankings sounds fun - post some notes on some writers you want to work with, get their rankings and explanations, and then you can compile the story. Go for it!
Also, just so you know, Ben is working on something similar but his will be having a group make their race picks each week - then we will all see how we did and keep score.
    Mary Jo

  9. Where did you say you lived Hollis?

My son tells me of large job opps at Aberdeen proving ground...are you with DuPont or Gore?

  10. Hey Hollis - check out my first attempt at a slide show - feedback welcome! Happy Holidays! Mary Jo

  11. Hollis there have been major changes to the voting categories because there have been somewhere between 10-15 added due to suggestions, so when you get a chance, go back through and cast votes for all the new categories and don't skip over the "most overrated driver" because that's thrown in the middle

  12. Hollis, great story on MWR - was hoping someone would write it and you didn't disappoint!! Just a comment - B/R style requires that you break up paragraphs into one or two sentences for easier and quick reading - just a thought for your next great opus! Hope all is well with you.
    MJ

  13. Hollis...were you a MHS Cavalier?
