It's a good thought John. Maybe I'll see about writing something in the offseason. My general feeling on "stat padding' is that it's usually an argument of convenience.
Sometimes there are those who have stats inflated because they play a big role on a horrible team, so they have a high usage. But generally speaking, the more real stars you have on a team the more efficiency goes up but overall numbers go down.
That's because you have to face less double teams (higher efficiency) but that's because you have more productive teammates (lower overall numbers).
That's why you see arguments going both ways, and why both are wrong.
