Hey Doug, what do you think of this?
According to the Yankees own statistics, Jeter is the All-Time leading Yankee in 4 offensive categories, while Joe D. leads in NONE.
Between the two of them, Jeter is ahead of Joe D. in 7 offensive categories, Joe D. is ahead of Jeter in 7 as well. In ALL of the power categories (HR, RBI, SLG, and triples) as well as Batting Average and OBP, Joe D. leads. Perhaps most significantly, Jeter has almost TWICE as many games and at-bats than Joe D., so it is fair to say that Joe D. was far more DOMINANT and had a more powerful impact on the team during his career. If Joe D. had not lost 3 of his peak years to the war, and had stayed healthy and played consistently, he would have ended up with about 2,800 hits (second all time), 481 HR (4th all time), and 1800 RBI (3rd all time).
I think you've got to take Joe D. over Jeter.
In the modern era (since 1960), there has only been ONE Yankee to rival Jeter as an "elite" Yankee, and that's Mickey Mantle. In all of the offensive categories, Mantle leads the Yankees in NONE, but beats Jeter out in 5 categories, while Jeter beats Mantle in 8. (Only Jeter has struck out more times than Mantle, but I'm not counting that stat because its more a function of # of at bats. I don't care HOW they make out, I care how often they get on base). Statistically, Jeter looks like a much more dominant Yankee than Mantle, but Mantle's "career years" were FAR more dominant than Jeter's. Mantle won the MVP THREE times, and Triple Crown in 1956. He also made the All Star Team 20 times (!!!) to Jeter's 13. I think Mantle was a more dominating force.
I think you've got to take Mantle over Jeter as well. He's the only one in the "modern era" to compare to Jeter, but Mantle sort of bridges between the "oldies" with the "modern". Most of Mantle's "great" years were in the 50's and early 60's. There has been nobody in 45 years to come close to Jeter.
So, my list of Greatest All Time Yankees is as follows:
Ruth
Gherig
Dimaggio
Mantle
Jeter
Modern Era: (more on this later)
Jeter
B. Williams
Mattingly
Posada ?
Cano?
What do you think, Doug? Can you put this out there for a vote?
