I grew up 6 miles north of the USC campus during the 40's and 50's, and have been a Trojan fan since about the 4th. or 5th.grade. Living so close to the to the Coliseum and Bovard Field and the fact that my father was an SC fan, it was natural for me to root for the Cardinal and Gold. I was also an avid fan of their track team during SC's heyday on the cinders. I played football and ran track at John Marshall High School for three years, playing halfback both ways, and running the 100, 220, and anchoring the 8-man mile relay team for 2 years. In 1956 our football team won our league championship for the first time since 1942. Our All-City fullback, the late Clark Holden, went on to play for Jess Hill at USC. I went into the Air Force for four years right after high school so I never got to see Clark play as a Trojan. After serving in the military I worked for several companies until I started one of my own. I eventually bought another business and ran it until 2001, when I chose retirement over work. My wife of 46 years and I reside in a beach community, in a house overlooking the ocean. I never miss a Trojan football game on television, preferring my living room to battling the crowd at the Coliseum. Besides golf, I enjoy writing letters to the editor to the L.A. Times and OC Register. It's a natural, after a stint as the sports editor of our high school newspaper.
