Short List

  • Favorite Athletes

Joe Pavelski, Patrick Willis, Tim Lincecum, Pat Burrell, Stephen Curry, Joe Cannon, Mark Grieb, Evan Longoria, Franck Ribery, Kevin Durant

  • Favorite Sports Teams

Santa Clara Broncos, Sharks, 49ers, Giants, Warriors, Earthquakes, Sabercats, A's, Rays, Bayern Munich, Thunder

  • Favorite Coaches

The late, great Bill Walsh, Darren Arbet, Frank Yallop, Bob Bradley

  • All Time Sports Moment

In my memory...tie between Boise State's Statue of Liberty in the 2007 Fiesta Bowl and Landon Donovan's goal against Algeria in the 2010 World Cup.

  • Most Memorable Game Attended

Either the 2008 American Conference Championship game which the San Jose Sabercats won or the 2009 Bellarmine-St. Francis football game...go Bells!

  • Most Unbreakable Sports Record

Besides the records due to sheer longevity or a changed game (hello baseball), probably Wayne Gretzky's goals (894), assists (1,963) or points (2,857) records.

  • Ruth or Mays?

Willie Mays...Ruth was a great pitcher and hitter, but he missed a great deal of his competiton, Josh Gibson could have done what he did. Mays had all five tools, he's still the greatest player of all time.

  • Unitas or Montana?

Joe Montana. Remember Unitas with the Chargers? You don't want to. Montana got the Chiefs to the AFC title game in his final season...that's how good he was.

  • Jordan or Russell?

Russell had more accomplishments (winning a title as a player-manager is just ridiculous, as are his ten other rings), but had Jordan not retired he'd have equaled Russell's 8 straight titles and he is, by force of will, the single greatest basketball player of all time.

  • Gretzky or Orr?

The what-if game could give you Orr, but injury felled him before he could do enough to match Gretzky. True, as a defenseman, Orr was phenomenal, but Wayne's "The Great One" for a reason.

  • Pele or Maradona?

Pele. He never turned into a caricature of himself during his playing days or embarrassed his country with a drug conviction.

  • Federer or Sampras?

Federer...career grand slam. Yes, Nadal was injured, but Sampras was never even as effective as Federer was in Nadal's healthy years at Roland Garros...in fact, Sampras never even made the final.

  • Tiger or Nicklaus?

Amazing how much one year can change this answer. Before last year's PGA Championship, even though he was 5 majors away from the record, Tiger was a perfectly legitimate answer. Now...you almost have to go with the Golden Bear. Tiger may yet break the record...but I'm not nearly as sure anymore.

  • Petty or Earnhardt?

I'm not particularly knowledgeable in auto racing...

  • Schumacher or Senna?

    See above.

  • ACC, Big 12, Big East, Big Ten, Pac-12 or SEC?

Pac-10...the Big 12 won't last the decade and the SEC is overrated in football (though it's superior in basketball, if only because of Kentucky and, maybe, Florida).
