The Steinbrenners are economic terrorists responsible for the inflation of market value for players, and in turn the inflation of ticket/concession prices, and the extreme increase of revenue for baseball. If you watched the Home Run Race of '98 and were entertained, don't let me hear you complaining about them taking steroids. Major League Baseball has never and probably never will be "clean," not to mention the fact that you were entertained by watching three guys hit home runs at an otherwordly pace. For the fans, baseball is entertainment. You were entertained. You kept giving the league your money, and in business, that gives them the green light to go ahead and keep taking steroids, because you fans were eating it up. Too late to call foul play now when you ate it up 10 years ago. All the players and some of the more intelligent fans knew it was going on, maybe they should have said something then if it was so repulsive to them.
"Peter Sagal: The Yankees won their 27th World Series, but that news pales next to the fact that the team's general manager just gave us permission to call them anything we want. So. We worked on this. How about...
Carl Kassel: "A Group of Wildly Overpaid Egotistical Mercenaries Whose Pinstripes Are Actually Artfully Lined-up Steroid Needles Sewn into Their Uniforms."
--Sounds about right.
For what the Yankees paid Derek Jeter in 2009, they could afford to field a lineup of Brian McCann, Adrian Gonzalez, Dustin Pedroia, Troy Tulowitzki, Evan Longoria, Carl Crawford, Jacoby Ellsbury, and Adam Jones, with money left over. If you don't like Pedroia or Longoria, you could take them out and replace them with Brandon Phillips or Ryan Zimmerman.
With just a couple of days before the 2010 Ford Ironman Championship in Hawaii, I talk with one of the favorites—last year's runner-up, American Chris Lieto:
