On May 11, 2009, I received the following comment to an article I wrote from Andrew Kahn of Bleacher Report:
Good article, Jeff. It was cited in a WSJ story today:

Congrats.

I'm not sure where there is a video from the replay. They showed it about ten times during the game.
I think a lot of us ND guys are just beaten at this point and thought that,
A.) ND shouldn't have been in the position to rely on a call to try and win
B.) If the call wasn't changed it still set up a 4th and 16, plus marching down the rest of the field.

Jeff,
Here's my take on the "fumble" during the ND-Pitt game. At first it looked clearly to be an incomplete pass.
On the replay it was less convincing, although still nowhere near undisputable that it was a fumble.
What happened is Clausen dropped back, planted his foot, and just as he was about to throw, his own lineman hit him (Duncan got bullrushed into him...no surprise there!).
It gets a little tricky because to me, it looked like Clausen started a forward motion, although it was very close. The ball got jarred a little bit too, but Clausen kept a decent grip on it. So he followed through except the momentum from being hit knocked him off balance and he ended up being sideways a bit and "threw" the ball awkwardly down the field.
It was ruled incomplete and the problem I have with this call in general, is that all the players but one guy stopped playing. One Pitt guy picked the ball up and started running but he stopped because of the whistles.
I just don't like that call. I don't think it was a fumble, and even if it was Notre Dame didn't make a break for the ball because it was blown dead. It's tough to overturn a call like that, especially in that situation.
As far as the media not investigating, who knows. We're seeing a lot of people complaining about the officiating in a lot of games. Hopefully, something is done by the NCAA.
With Weis, I would have liked to see him go nuts on the call, but the point was moot I guess. I've heard he was sent to anger managment classes by some priests and I bet he's hoping that if he stays calm in defeat he might save his job. It's pretty lame.

Jeff,
I completely understand what you're saying about getting excited and just letting the writing go when you get excited. However, it is definitely easier for a reader to follow shorter sentences than ones that are more "run on".
Commas are also a difficult topic, because depending on where your articles appear, there are certain comma requirements, so to speak, about times when a comma must be used. In the end, you are the writer, and the decision is ultimately up to you. Our goal as editors is never to change the flow of your article, we are only here to make the presentation of your thoughts as clear and professional as possible.

Jeff - Thought you might enjoy a fun, quick ND history session... I had a great time with the research.

Hey that was my bad! I did not notice the disclaimer of extra point! So again my fault there. I really enjoyed your article.

Hey Jeff. It is appropriate to start a sentence with "and," although doing it too much isn't a great idea. I think it adds emphasis to certain sentences. I really appreciate you taking it up with me, though.

After an impressive offseason, many expected Bengals wide receiver Chris Henry to have a breakout season. It may be early, but he has struggled in the first three games of the 2009 season and the emergence of Andre Caldwell may have something to do with it.

Here you go:
We want to use em-dashes (—) instead of double-hyphens (--), en-dashes (–), or any other form of dash. The em-dash is the longest type of dash, and is created by typing SHIFT-OPTION-(dash) on a Mac keyboard and ALT-0151 on a PC (hold down ALT while typing 0151 on the numeric keypad).
(NB: If you're working on a PC without a numeric keypad, you'll have to copy and paste em-dashes as necessary. Here's one to get you started: —)
There should be no spaces on either side of the em-dash. Proper formatting looks like—this.
Hope that helps!

After one of the worst losses my own two eyes have seen, I decided to write this piece on loyalty to your team and dealing with the hardship of defeat. A must read for Irish fans.
