  • Unitas or Montana?

  • Jordan or Russell?

I'd take Russell. Russell's impact was more profound and immediate. Prior to his NBA tenure, the Celtics were not a true contender even though the team had FOUR hall of fame players with three of whom already established all star/first team all-nba caliber players (see: Macauley, Sharman, and Cousy). When Russell joined, championships flowed. When he retired, the Celtics faded into mediocrity even though they still had hall of fame players Havlicek and Howell on the roster. Jordan never proved he could take a team to a new level until Pippen improved. During the pre-Pippen years, Jordan's Bulls posted three losing seasons and a 1-9 playoff record. When Jordan retired in late1993, the 1993-94 Bulls only slipped TWO games from the previous season, and they IMPROVED on defense despite replacing Jordan with a CBA-caliber journeyman who was not in the NBA the previous two seasons. How can this be? How can a team replace "the GREATEST player in NBA history," and one of the greatest defenders of all time, and still win 55 games along with improving on defense? How is it that the 1992-93 Bulls missed homecourt advantage in the Eastern Conference by THREE games WITH Jordan, but missed homecourt advantage by TWO games WITHOUT Jordan (who was replaced by a CBA journeyman) in 1994? That is NOT supposed to happen. Jordan's impact was overrated. Jordan was a great individual player, but he is the most OVERRATED athlete in professional sports history and he is NOT the greatest player in NBA history.
