About

I'm a Philadelphia area (South Jersey) author/speaker/humorist/sportswriter who sometimes takes his sports too seriously. As of late, 2013, I'm the co-author of a brand new (2013) release titled, A Snowball's Chance: Philly Fires Back Against the National Media.

http://www.philly2philly.com/snowballs_chance_new_book_philly2philly_0

Readers and fellow BR writers: Feel free to contact me for interviews and info about this new book.

My sports writing was somewhat nourished here, and while I had to recently give up my "Featured Columnist" status here - as I don't have the time to write two or three columns per week here anymore - I take my byline seriously and will always endeavor to submit quality ideas and analysis. Indeed, I always want to write the type of articles I would love to read, showcasing sports knowledge, passion, humor and integrity of opinion. I am not going to write any old junk just to bait readers, but once I write a good piece (hopefully, always) I do want it to be read, enjoyed and...depending on the type of content...discussed and debated.

I also write sports columns for my own www.tipofthegoldberg blog, have created a series of satiric sports interviews for www.philly2philly.com (I still contribute to that site occasionally) and in September, 2011, started my own weekly column about the Jewish sports world which I title "Bagels and Jocks." For now, it runs on www.jewocity.com ....I hope to soon have it available on numerous sites and publications.

As an author, I have written and published four books, including "Wordapodia, Volume One: An Encyclopedia of Real Fake Words "(late 2010) and "All That Twitters is Not Goldberg" (2011); please visit www.tipofthegoldberg.com for more details.

For comments about individual columns, please comment there. For other writing, interview and speaking requests (I have won many different Toastmasters International competitions as a speaker, and love setting up programs with various companies and groups), try matt@tipofthegoldberg.com, or pm me via BR.

I also will do customized writing for your personal and business needs/requests; contact me.

As an athlete, I'm no superstar, but love competing in softball leagues. My tennis game is starting to come back as well, even if basketball leagues appear to be in my rear view mirror. As a Philly guy, I'm mostly devoted to the Phillies and Eagles, and can be passionate about the Flyers and Sixers as well. I also enjoy watching college hoops and pigskin, tennis and golf.

I am married with a young son; reading, laughing and goofing around with him is my greatest joy.

Short List

  • Favorite Athletes

Current: In no particular order: Albert Pujols, Chase Utley, Cliff Lee, Aaron Rodgers, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Ana Ivanovic, Jameer Nelson, LeBron James and too many others to list. In the past: so many, from my very first sports idol, Hank Aaron, to Philly athletes including (yes) Lonnie Smith, Charles Barkley, Dr. J, Eric Lindros, Wilbert Montgomery, Donovan McNabb and a million more.

  • Favorite Sports Teams

I'm a Philly guy: Phillies, Eagles, Sixers, Flyers...Big 5 Hoops in general (I'm a Penn alum, but root for all the teams)

  • Favorite Coaches

It's getting tougher: In college hoops, Jay Wright, Fran Dunphy and Phil Martelli are pure class.

  • All-Time Sports Moment

    Still awaiting...it's coming...but 1974-75, 1980, 1983. 1985 and 2008 were all great.

  • Most Memorable Game Attended

January 11, 1981 -- Eagles 20, Cowboys 7...cold as heck, and my voice just recovered.

  • Most Unbreakable Sports Record

There are better records, but I'm leaning toward Ripken's 2632 consecutive. Cy Young's 511 won't be broken, either.

  • Ruth or Mays?

Ruth - still the best all-time MLB player -- no slight on the Say Hey Kid, who was awesome.

  • Unitas or Montana?

Not sure that's the correct debate..I didn't see U at his best, so Montana by some default

  • Jordan or Russell?

Where's Wilt in this? As a player? Jordan. As a winner? Russell. Best individual talent ever? Wilt

  • Gretzky or Orr?

Orr...probably the single greatest hockey player to lace 'em up, and I loved Gretzky

  • Pele or Maradona?

Pele...but can't say I get too exorcised about this debate.

  • Federer or Sampras?

Give me Laver (two calendar year Grand Slams 7 years apart)...I'll give Fed the edge over Pete. Let's see if Rafa can catch him.

  • Tiger or Nicklaus?

Well, it now seems to be an easy vote for Jack, but...Tiger at his best was probably the greatest. I guess Tiger needs to get to 19 majors...will he?

  • Petty or Earnhardt?

The King, but again, how about the next one?

  • Schumacher or Senna?

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...(not the sound of engines racing)

  • ACC, Big 12, Big East, Big Ten, Pac-12 or SEC?

    Big 5

Regarding your Dontrelle Willis article's headline, as editors, it's our duty to modify headlines so that they contain the most pertinent information. That way, when someone types a particular keyword that happens to be in your headline into a search query, the search engine is more likely to recognize your article and display it among the top results.

I realize your original headline was catchy, but sometimes catchy doesn't cut it for search engine optimization (SEO). If your article is prominently featured on B/R and not immediately archived, a senior editor will typically rework the optimized headline into something that will stand out to readers (like yours). That is why you will notice the headline of an article on the homepage, for example, does not match the headline that appears when you click through to read it. Hopefully, this gives you a better understanding of how the process works.

    Hey Matt,

I've just posted a story about the global evolution of tennis and the increasing popularity of the sport. I've put a lot of time and effort into it, and I'd be really grateful to get any feedback you have.

If you get a chance to check it out, that would be great.

    Matt-

We both jumped on the firing Reid article. Had to laugh when I saw us both defending him. Tough loss to end the season.

Better luck next year? Who knows.

At least we get to watch the best pitching combo in baseball now. That's the plus side here.

Can you believe that Redskins FC, about Shanahan embarrassing McNabb?

I had to post a comment. I had to defend my boy.

I also chalked up an article about it. Tell me what you think.

Have to spread the #5 love. You know how it is.

    Matt-

I think we share many of the same opinions on Donovan.

I definitely have a spot in my all-time list, reserved for McNabb, Redskin or not.

The Debunking McNabb column was absolutely killer. Truly an awesome work.

As far as your latest article, you definitely toned down the amount of McNabb, and focused more on the team efforts. Which is something I should have touched on a little more in mine.

Good work, I really enjoy your writing style.

Hey Matt -- Miguel Cabrera and Josh Hamilton both have similar stories, but only Hamilton gets the hype, why?
