Stephen Black has just surrendered to his sportswriting passion after a six-year "cup of coffee" in the corporate world. He currently writes for a weekly publication distributed in metro Atlanta. When he is not writing, he is searching for a good game to watch and people to discuss it with.

Stephen lives in Atlanta and loves to observe the four major professional sports when not obsessing about college sports. He is a graduate of the University of Georgia and follows SEC football especially closely. He also has an unexplainable fascination for international soccer that makes his red-blooded American parents question his sanity.

Hey Stephen,

Cool background story about Cal!

I didn't follow baseball all that closely in 96'; in 97' I got back into it and the Braves were on after school every day on TNT/TBS so I got in the habit of watching them.

Even though they were past their peak, they were still a really fun team to watch then—still had Maddux, Glavine, and Smoltz...being able to consistently watch brilliant pitching was something I truly appreciated. Their Lineup was pretty tight too that year, w/ Chipper, The Big Cat, Javy, etc.

I also have always have a fondness for the Braves because I'm an A's fan and hate the SF Giants with a passion. Thus naturally having my buddies who were Giants fans hate the Braves made me love them all the more.

1. My comment was more to dogs than just bulldogs, but there are plenty of bulldogs. Georgetown (yes I know they say hoyas, but it's a pic of a bulldog), Fresno State, Gonzaga and those are just the ones that come to me right now. Plus look at all the excuses you just made, "they copied us", "we're the division one dawgs" "we spelled it this way first". I'm not sure that all that's accurate, but even if it is, it doesn't matter. There are still a ton of schools with dogs as their mascots, and most commonly bulldogs. If you like that, fine, but I don't and that's why I don't like UGA. Nothing against you.

2. You're opinion vs. mine on what looks nice. But you agree you stole it. Not cool.

3. Again, you're opinion vs. mine on what looks nice as far as color. Ohio State is basically the same color scheme, but less black. TTech, same but way more black and no grey. Almost no schools have the same colors AND use them exactly the same way (except maybe OU and Indiana's football uniforms). My point is that your color scheme/uniforms are very similar to a LOT of schools. Texas' orange is unique, no one has that same orange. I also don't think anyone has a completely white road uniform. Again, this argument comes down to preference, so no real right or wrong, although I think I kinda prove you're still not unique.

4. Pretty good point about moving to Texas, but I really do think SEC pple just take it to another level. But you're probably right overall.

I haven't come to a game yet, but I really really want to. I won't be wearing red though, sorry. I might wear black, and I won't wear the opposing team's colors. But I might just we my Texas gear. I gotta be true to myself.

I hate Tenn. as much as you do man. I call them the fake UT. I mean they were technically there first, but they don't do anything as well as us. Well except women's bball, but I was really meaning image and attitude wise. They're lame, and OMG I hate that dreamsicle orange uni they have. Ugh!

Alright it's nothing personal, in fact my girlfriend is a UGA grad, but here's my breakdown of why I don't like UGA:

1. Probably the biggest thing is I don't like dogs. Yeah I know you didn't think it was possible, but yes there's a person that doesn't like them. I don't wanna get into an argument about it because I have lots of them and they're never fruitful. So your mascot is a dog, strike one. Although I can't say it's a huge reason cuz I'm indifferent to other dog schools and even like the Washington Huskies. But generally I think having a dog as your mascot is extremely un-unique. I mean just about everyone has a dog, whoopty do. Having a dog, along with other things I'll mention contribute to my opinion of UGA as an extremely generic university.

2. The "G", you stole it from Green Bay! Not only that, Grambling uses it, and although you can't help it, just about every H.S. that starts with a G uses it. Extremely "G"eneric. Not to mention, it ain't that cool, it's just a letter.

3. Red and Black. Two of the 4 most common colors (white and blue being the other) used in all of sports. Then you also use white and grey as accents. I'm a graphic designer and artist so these things can make a difference for me. So you have 3 boring neutral colors and then an extremely common primary color in Red. Not only is it boring, but it's just ugly. Sorry to hate. Plus all of Texas' biggest rivals use some form of red (OU, Tex A&M, Arkansas and Nebraska) so you didn't start off on a good foot.

4. I live in Atlanta so you and your SEC brethren are everywhere! I guess this would be the case in any SEC town, but it's crazy here. I mean I didn't really like you guys for the above reasons before I moved here, but since moving here and having to actually deal with you pple my dislike has increased. I've met many people who were indifferent to not only UGA, but college football in general who through interaction with your fans became haters of UGA. So I don't think I'm unjustified in saying that you guys are annoying.

5. If I wanna be picky and dig some more, I'll add that there's a much more famous and larger city named Athens, so that contributes to the generic factor. But then again, it's a pretty cool city to name yourself after, so really I'm just being a jerk.

Again, nothing personal just my personal preferences. Take solace in the fact that A. I did like Athens very much B. I am dating one of you, so I can't hate you that much C. And you can do almost nothing to make me hate you on any level close to what I feel for OU, A&M and Miami.

When I was down in Florida for the Orange Bowl 5 years ago (USC v Iowa), I had the time of my life. The people are fantastic, the culture is unreal (I have a little Latin in me so the music and food hit home) and the life-style reminds me of Cali. Laid back.

The people down there are full of life....totally my type of people! So, I met a ton of Gator fans, and ended up going to the Swamp the next year ( I have no recollection of the entire day) and was inducted into the Gators football program. What a blast that was. Hard to explain, but it was two awesome experiences plus hanging with Gator fans was just a hoot.

They are certifiable...I love them. Love the chomp chomp. Love the wild blue and orange colors. Love the whole package.

I'm going to Homestead, Florida the week of November 16th to hang with the Miller Lite Racing Team and write about the last NASCAR race...sounds like fun, and it's close to Miami! Not sure what's in store for me, but I am part of the team for an entire week and eat, sleep and drink with them the entire time. (I was in Talladega last year for FOXSports.com and had a blast there too, but did not get the 'Bama football feeling while I was there...the Auburn fans kept distracting me!)

I am a default fan of LSU since I now live in Baton Rouge. I also respect Saban and Spurrier as coaches. But most of all, and I'm sure you figured this out already, I love Mark Richt.

So, yeah, I guess I am an SEC fan, so to speak:-).
