You're probably right. After all, I don't watch every Real Madrid game like I do for Barca. However, I just remember Di Maria as the player who showed up the most in the big moments. Of particular note to me were his performances last season vs Bayern, Atletico, and Barca. Against us, he was hands down the most deadly player, especially in the 4-3 where he ate Alves alive (he could have finish with something like 5 assists with better Real finishing) and in the CdR, two games where Ronaldo didn't show up (the second one 'cause he didn't play, obviously) and Xabi Alonso and Modric weren't able to restrict Barca's passing much, and it was a bad Barca at that. So, I think Di Maria was the key for Ancelotti to play that 4-3-3, the glue to that formation, just like he is for Argentina. At the WC he was playing mediocre football, but his absence was probably the reason why Argentina lost it, apart from the misses. At Real, he allowed Ancelotti to get away with the Modric-Alonso double pivot (kind of soft with Alonso declining and Modric being more of a fine passer). Now, Kroos or James replaces Di Maria. While both guys are extremely talented and probably more consistent performers (Kroos for sure), I don't see either guy offering Di Maria's work rate, his double-edged sword. Now, I don't think you guys are gonna suffer something like what Pep did to Bayern, but I'm looking forward at the next clasico. We got tons of issues too, but you guys are kind of throwing away two of your most dangerous players against us: Di Maria and Khedira.

I don't think Di Maria is as replaceable as Ozil was, for instance. And forgive me if you don't agree, but apart from Bale's arrival and Benzema improving, I think Di Maria was the one who made it all possible for Madrid to finally win it.

If only Garcia hadn't scored, then we'd have a much more open game at the Calderon. Your takeaways from the game?
