The comments section in that article has quickly been hijacked off the original topic. Due to that I decided to answer your question here.
The following is a few of the reasons I feel the South Carolina defensive line is at least on par with those of Alabama and LSU.

To start, they lead the SEC in sacks and quarterback hurries as a defensive line.
Melvin Ingram and Jadeveon Clowney are ranked 5 and 15 nationally in sacks, and they are the South Carolina defensive ends.
Ingram and Clowney are ranked 18 and 95 nationally in tackles for loss.
The South Carolina defensive line has made over 88 tackles this season.
They have more sacks, tackles, tackles for loss and quarterback hurries than either LSU or Alabama.

By contrast Alabama's has produced a total of 42 tackles.
Nick Gentry is the only Alabama player ranked in sacks and he is at 93 nationally.
Courtney Upshaw is the only Alabama player ranked in tackles for loss and he ranks 18 nationally. If you add UpShaw's statistics to the Alabama defensive line statistics it still only brings them to 56 total tackles. Even adding the linebacker, it is still 36 less than South Carolina.

LSU has no player nationally ranked in sacks or tackles for loss. They have a total of 75 tackles from their defensive line but nowhere near as many sacks or tackles for loss as South Carolina.

There is also the fact that Melvin Ingram is considered by most the most dominant defensive lineman in college football so far this season. He has accumulated 68 yards rushing, two interceptions, one touchdown rushing and three touchdowns overall, one fumble recovery, 8 tackles for loss, 5.5 sacks, 21 tackles overall, three quarterback hurries and one pass defended.

This is absolutely incredible through five games for a defensive end. My personal opinion is that he should get some Heisman consideration if he keeps it up.
