First of all, Thank you for welcoming my two cents, as well as taking the time to respond.
I really can't disagree with anything that wrote. I know Kirby Smart played at Georgia, and I agree, that probably gives him a slight edge in his ability to recruit in that state. I see it just a tiny bit differently than you do, when it comes to the head coaching part. This is how I see it unfolding...
If he really wanted the HC job at Georgia, I feel that he would have accepted the offer to become Georgia's Defensive Coordinator, when they offered it to him a couple of years ago. He could have taken that offer, earned twice as much money as he was making at Alabama, and been able to start recruiting the players that he would like to have playing for him, as he waited silently as the "coach in waiting". Flip side of that is, Saban gave him a raise, in order to keep him at the Capstone, that exceeded what Georgia had offered him. That leads me down more roads of possible scenarios.
It can't be about his heart being in Georgia, because he would have taken the offer, had more money, and been where his heart is. However, it could have been that his heart is set on taking the Georgia HC job, if it opens before Bama's HC job does, and he wanted to be a sponge and soak up as much knowledge from the best coach in college football for as long as he could. So, he would be taking with him some extremely valuable skills that he learned from a mastermind of the game added with the knowledge that he himself already has. I really think that he knows he is where he needs to be as a professional to get the most out of his career.
Let's say Saban stays another 7 years, and I think he will, and Smart stays with him those 7 years. That will mean that Smart will be the one assistant that has remained with Saban for a length of time longer than anyone else ever has. You naturally pick up on peoples tendencies when you are around them that much. So he is going to know the details of what Saban does that seperates him from the rest of the coaches in college football. Im not necessarily referring to the X's and O's. Saban walks and talks excellence and confidence. Saban admires Smart, and personally speaking, I feel that Saban has put Smart "under his wing". I'm sure you know what I mean by that term. By Smart turning down the Texas A&M head coaching job this past year, it made me feel more confident that he will remain in Tuscaloosa to become the next head coach.
Look at it from Mal Moore's perspective. If Smart is there when Saban retires, who else would be a better candidate to fill that position, other than someone who has been Saban's right hand man in a dominant and flawless system, for over 10 years? I can't see him searching America for another "big name" coach to fill the vacancy, without offering the head coaching job to Smart first. We both know that Smart would accept it before Mal Moore even finished offering it to him. LoL
We can talk on and on about the 'what if this', and the 'what if thats' for months, and we can if you'd like, but I believe there will be one thing that sends a clear signal within the next 2 years. I'm thinking it will probably happen at the end of next season.
The next offer that Smart gets will be from a school in which most people would think would be a no brainer decision to accept. I think when he refuses his next offer, that will be our sign that he is staying for a reason. Now, I don't think that offer will be from Georgia. It may be from Tennessee, but it won't be Georgia. I think Georgia turns it around this year and beats out South Carolina in becoming the SEC East Champion. Aaron Murray and a dominant defense with a solid running game lead me to believe Georgia will win the East. That will save Richt's job for him.
Anything is possible though, and my words are spoken more out of wishful thinking on this particular subject, than they normally are. Feel free to chat with me anytime. I'm always willing to hear and discuss another true fans perspective. Let me know what you think.
I happened to see where you were asking Sanjay and Jimmy about Kirby Smart and his future. That is something that I've been wondering about as well. I know you didn't ask me but I thought I would give you my thoughts on it. lol
Kirby Smart is the best DC in college football. He is only going to get more and more offers and you can't blame him if he decides to accept one of these head coaching offers at some point. Obviously coordinators want to become head coaches. Smart has already turned down offers, so that says that it's going to have be the "right" offer to lure him away from Alabama and Coach Saban. I don't want to see him go by any means, and I can only respect his decision if he chooses to leave for a HC position.
I think outside of the box many times, and I always hope for the best. I usually keep my wishful thinking to myself but I want to share this thought with you. I think that Kirby Smart will be the next head coach at The University of Alabama, after Saban retires. I don't know if Smart will remain DC for Alabama until that point though. If Smart isn't on the staff at Alabama when Saban retires, I look for him to leave wherever he is in order to become Alabama's next head coach.
Roll Tide !!
Hey Sanjay I have a few requests of things I'd like updates, discussion, etc on if you or your fellow writers could find time to write. Thanks
1. With all the DL talent the Tide just signed whats going to happen to Brandon Ivory?
2. Is this Kirby Smarts last year as our DC and if so who will replace him?
3. Recruiting 2013 What are the chances we land Robert Nkemdiche and Montravius Adams?
Thanks for reading, and as always, I appreciate the kind words.
As for your questions: 1 - Jimmy pretty much nailed it on him, but I think he will have a chance to get on the field this year, because the competition for that NT spot is open and he's had a full year to learn the system and that should help him. Plus, Williams can and does line up at DE sometimes. It will be interesting to see how that plays out in the spring.
2 - I think its only a matter of time before Smart is plucked away for a HC job. However, I think he realizes that the longer he stays at Alabama and produces great defenses, the better chance he will have of landing a better job where he can be successful at right away. He's already turned down several jobs, and I think he's holding out for a job at a BCS school that can be a consistent winner. As for his replacement, Saban is a defensive guy, so I would expect him to get a guy he feels comfortable with. I don't see anyone currently on that side he would promote, but after the switcharoo with UT coaches last season, it wouldn't surprise me to see Sunseri back at Alabama at some point.
3 - I profiled Nkemdiche in my last column, and I believe he will eventually land in Tuscaloosa. His coach is a former 'Bama player, and he's rumored to be leaning to Alabama. On Adams, Alabama will be in the hunt for him as well until the end. However, with the Tide loading up on DT's in the 2012 class, it will be interesting to see if that has an effect on him. Will research it more, and if I get enough info, I may write a story on it.
Thanks once again, Justin!
Hey man. These are some good topics I'd like to look deeper into int he near future (I have an assigned topic for tomorrow's that I am working on at the moment)
1. With all the DL talent the Tide just signed whats going to happen to Brandon Ivory?
Ivory is in a funny situation. He was a sleeper project that redshirted in 2010 so he has a lot of eligibility left. I think Jesse Williams will be at NT next year so Ivory could look to get some backup time, and make a strong push for playing time as a junior.
2. Is this Kirby Smarts last year as our DC and if so who will replace him?
Kirby Smart may be looking to take a HC somewhere but if he were smart (pun intended) he'd stick around Alabama for a while. When Saban retires Smart could be the ideal candidate to take over without skipping a beat. I don't see Saban coaching past 65.
3. Recruiting 2013 What are the chances we land Robert Nkemdiche and Montravius Adams?
Rivals says Nkemdiche is being recruited directly by Kirby Smart so that says a lot, and Georgia is a good pipeline state that Saban and co. preen well each year. Bama losing its entire starting defensive line after this year (if the starters are who I expect them to be). Loooot of room for early playing time so that's a big incentive.
Thanks for the questions, I appreciate the support!
Oh and we have the same all time sports moment.
I'd take a gamble right now and say that you miss the Charlotte Hornets and Muggsy Bogues as much as I do...
