James's Bio

New Jersey born and raised, and while I still follow some New York area teams, the Mets and Yankees are not among them. Been a Braves fan all my life, but adopted the Blue Jays as the 2nd favorite along the way. Jason Kidd made the Nets a team to watch again, and while there's a handful of teams I like in the NFL, there was something sweet about seeing Golden Boy Brady getting slammed to the turf by the Giants in Super Bowl XLII. I'll go to a Lobo basketball game or football game for an entertaining break from dissertation research, but as a graduate student, I can't say I care a whole lot about UNM.

I'm working on my PhD in Earth and Planetary Sciences doing climate modeling and remote sensing analysis. I got my BS in Physics at Rochester Institute of Technology where the only sport that is Div-1 (Men's Ice Hockey) is the one I follow on webcast from 2000 miles away. I got my masters in Atmospheric Sciences in South Dakota while serving a tour in the Air Force as a civil engineer, and working briefly at NASA in Maryland.

Sports - I can play about a dozen sports pretty well. I'm also smart enough to realize that I love sports and my favorite teams - but in the grand scheme of things, sports are of low importance in the real world.

As for my list of people the sports world would be best without:
1. The Steinbrenners (All of them)
2. Bud Selig
3. David Stern
4. Barry Bonds
5. Roger Clemens
6. Donald Fehr
7. Scott Boras
8. Drew Rosenhaus
9. Bruce Bowen
10. Jerry Jones

  4. Oh, thanks. Yeah, I actually had a ton of fun watching his reaction. I didn't see it as poor sportsmanship at all, not in a team event.

  5. Thanks for the support and feedback. I had a read of your Olympics in Perspective article and its good. I too have tried some of those things like 400m against women's 400 hurdles and I'm about 4 seconds out and working on it. Good to see more people with considered and mature views on sports, unlike certain 'contributors' I've noticed recently.

  6. James, I'm not working in firefox today so here's some editor's feedback.

Great article! I just tweaked your teaser, corrected the capitalization in your headline, and edited for style. Make sure everything checks out to your liking—keep up the awesome work!

  7. James, I really enjoyed your piece on the Pythagorean predictions. However, while editing it I couldn't get the chart to align, and I'm really not sure where everything goes, so I was hoping you'd be able to take a look at it when you get a change and get it squared away. Thanks!
