About

About Joel Greer (Michigan Fats):

I’ve been around sports since the third grade, riding the bus with the “big kids” to Detroit Red Wings and Tigers games. Probably my best moment was not earning all-city honors in golf, nor coaching a youth football team to an undefeated season. It was actually scoring a goal in a pick up hockey game at the old Olympia Stadium in Detroit.

Now a Featured Columnist for Michigan football at Bleacher Report, I’m delighted to share my interest in the Wolverines. As a student at the University of Michigan, I joined the sports staff at the student-run Michigan Daily in 1969—once taking a taxi-cab from Duluth, MN to Houghton, MI with six young ladies headed for the Winter Carnival at Michigan Tech.

The following year I began phoning in Michigan hockey covers to the Ann Arbor News while on the road.

I also spent time with the Michigan Athletic Department, serving on the Advisory Committee for Recreation, Intramurals and Club Sports.

Other than journalism, I also worked in advertising and printing before my retirement in 2009.

Today, I spend some of my spare time coaching golf for the First Tee organization, a group affiliated with the World Golf Foundation and Hall of Fame in St. Augustine, FL.

* * *

My current nickname evolved on the second floor of the (University of) Michigan Union sometime in 1970, when the Student Activities Center sponsored a billiards exhibition with Luther "Wimpy" Lassiter as himself. Assigned the story by the Michigan Daily, I arrived on the scene an hour early, hopefully in time for a casual interview with a great pool shark, and a quick lesson.

Wimpy ripped my stroke, all right, and joked about my " obvious" resemblance to his pal, "Minnesota Fats." With the grace of Paul Newman, Wimpy displayed his skills by sinking ball after ball: 10, 20, 30 in a row.
It was probably 20 minutes later, when he finally lost the table. "Don't take all day, Minnesota," Wimpy joked."
The joke was really on me as my buddy hollered across the room, "Luther, he's not from Minnesota, he's from Michigan."

Hey Joel, it's Austin Fox, another featured columnist on the Michigan page. Could I have your email address to ask you a few questions? If you don't want to give it though, that's fine too.

Thanks for the correction. I know he used to coach there and I guess I just ran away with it before checking my facts. I felt terrible for making a mistake like that but it's appreciated.

I just wanted to say good luck in the ball game tonight. We must punish you, then win out and kill Michigan State in the last game before the tourney to ensure a #1 seed. Expect a thorough beatdown by the Buckeyes. I won't of course. I'm scared as hell. I know that you know me as a football fan, I like basketball just as much but I don't pay as much attention to it before conference games start. It's really great to have you Michigan guys back. It's the best rivalry in sports and I thought we were going to lose it. Good luck again and as always a "Go Blue" for you. If you get a chance, check out the story here at B/R on how the Bucks recruits won't help this year. It was written today. I'm afraid for this Kipp Lawton's life. If Herbstreit moved to Tennessee, this kid may be safe. He graduated from MTSU. Take care. Good luck again.

    Joel:

Pickerington, OH, not Pickering - Pickerington Central and Pickerington North! If we're recruiting these 2 guys, let's at least get the names of their city and schools right.

Hey Joel, I know you are a big Michigan Hockey Man. Good luck this weekend. I bet you'll be at the Joe tomorrow.

Of course, I'm hoping for a split. Perhaps, MSU can get it done in East Lansing tonight. Either way, it could be a long, bad night for MSU on Saturday!

While I do think that TSUN had no business playing in a BCS bowl and truly believe that the refs messed up on that TD pass call in OT for Va Tech, I do want to congratulate you and your weasels on a fantastic season. We fought for hours and hours over the preseason and I have to say... You won the argument. You know me as a loudmouth Buckeye fan even though I really am just a Buckeye fan that loves his Buckeyes. I tried to tell you that but I always thought that you just thought of me as some big mouth. I really do know my football. I do... I promise. That is why I am going on record to say this: Congratulations to you and Michigan (I said Michigan instead of TSUN) on a great season. No matter what happened, you Wolverines proved that you were the class of the Big Ten this year. It really is good to have you back. A Big Ten without Michigan is like a Big Ten without Ohio State. While our schools hate each other it is much better when they are both top 10 football schools. We both know that, right?

You are a great writer here at B/R and I can't wait for a few basketball talks with you (if you like b-ball), and then a lot of great talks about football during the offseason. Again...Michigan was the true Big Ten champs in my eyes and I once more will congratulate you on a great season. Thanks for representing the Big Ten well. See you around, brother. Take care

    Joel,
    1) How come Bo is not on your list of coaches?
    2) Do you worry about head injuries in football? Have you been following all the research that shows brain damage in just about everyone who plays the game--even without concussions?
    Keep up the good work!

Joel, Thanks for the post man, I really think that Diggs will be soon to follow Darboh!

I know it is wishful thinking, but the playmakers that our offense will have for next season will be amazing!

Have you heard any news on the possible decommit of Brionte Dunn? I really think he will decommit and join our top 5 recruiting class!

I think the fact that we are in the Sugar Bowl is going to really give us an edge in recruiting over the other BIg 10 schools if we didnt have one already for next year!

How do I dump you as a fan Joel? You are obviously not a fan of UM otherwise you wouldn't be so isolated from the fan base.
