English Cricket: Too Much Navel Gazing, Not Enough Guts?

Andrew Strauss and the Test Ahead
January 9, 2009
Be careful which teams you chose to support. I became a Redskins fan when I bought a stuffed toy from a supermarket, it was the early 80s when NFL was vaguely popular in the UK and I have no idea what made me pick up my little Redskins mascot, but I've been a fan ever since.
With football it's a little clearer. Most of the boys in my primary school class were Arsenal fans. I didn't like them much, so I told them I supported Spurs to annoy them. I think they've had the last laugh.
My biggest passion is cricket. It all started during a tour to the West Indies. We'd just got satellite TV in our house (I was about 14 at the time) and I watched the cancelled test match where the pitch literally crumbled, and every ball Ambrose or Walsh bowled had the potential to decapitate. Alec Stewart top scored with about 11 I think, but on any other pitch his efforts were well worth a ton. I was hooked, and have been ever since. I was lucky enough to be at the Oval when England won back the Ashes in 2005, and unlucky enough to be at Perth when we handed them back 18 months later.
As far as other sports go I have to say a quick word for netball. I was introduced to the game through my wife who grew up with one of the England team. Her dedication to the sport is impressive. It now annoys me when I see professional sportsmen or women under-performing because they're ill-prepared.
And that's about it. I also write about fatherhood. I can't wait until my boy is old enough to enjoy sport. Until then I'll just have to write about it.
Hi Geoff,
I have tried to put the cricket under the knife in my latest.
Any feedback is much appreciated :)
