About

Hello. I'm a professional writer who covers mixed martial arts and other sports topics in my spare time. I also edit articles for Bleacher Report MMA and work with other columnists to improve their writing.

The UFC and my beloved Maryland Terps come first, but I follow lots of different sports, teams and promotions. I live and work in and around Washington, D.C., and am proud to support the Bullets and Nationals. I'm also a recovering Redskin fan. Keep me in your thoughts...one day I'll be right again.

In general, I'm one of those crazy people who thinks following sports—yes, even MMA—is supposed to be fun. We're not curing cancer here. And, whenever possible, I try to write articles that reflect that philosophy. And if that means writing the occasional (or more than occasional) slideshow, well, that's the breaks. I'll deal with the fallout upon my inevitable induction into journalist Hell. I'll sit in the Maryland wing, right next to Jayson Blair, with a big scarlet "S" burned into my chestal area.

I've been excited to see my work featured on CBSSports.com and various MMA sites, as well as the websites of the Los Angeles Times, the Philadelphia Inquirer and the Houston Chronicle, among other newspapers. Content partnerships: they're the wave of the future, baby.

I always enjoy chatting it up with my fellow readers and writers. Trolls will be treated in accordance with the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson: "’Tis of no importance what bats and oxen think.”

I am also now on Twitter.

Short List

  • All Time Sports Moment

Maryland's national title in 2002, Redskins' Super Bowl win in 1988

  • Most Memorable Game Attended

    It's a three-way tie.

The first happened when I was a little kid. It's 1984. Texas A&M and the Wrecking Crew defense versus the juggernaut Texas Longhorns. Winner goes to the Cotton Bowl, loser heading for the Bluebonnet Bowl. Aggies win in College Station 42-10 (and go on to beat Bo Jackson's Auburn Tigers in Dallas).

The second happened in college, when Maryland upset the top-ranked Carter/Jamison/Haywood UNC team at Cole Field House. We stormed the court before storming the court was mentioned in the Maryland applicant brochure.

The third happened a few years ago at UFC 101 in Philadelphia. The event is probably best known for Anderson Silva's unbelievable knockout of Forrest Griffin, but I'll also remember for a long time B.J. Penn's brilliant title defense against Kenny Florian. What a night.

  • Most Unbreakable Sports Record

Cal Ripken's consecutive games streak. I don't see how you could pick anything else.

  • Ruth or Mays?

    Ruth

  • Unitas or Montana?

    Montana

  • Jordan or Russell?

    Jordan

  • Gretzky or Orr?

    Gretzky

  • Pele or Maradona?

    Madonna was attractive

  • Federer or Sampras?

    Federer and it's not close

  • Tiger or Nicklaus?

    It used to be Tiger

  • Petty or Earnhardt?

    The King

  • Schumacher or Senna?

Do I really have to decide who my favorite open-wheel racer is? It's just that they're all so compelling.

  • ACC, Big 12, Big East, Big Ten, Pac-12 or SEC?

    ACC, baby.

I just read a few of your other articles and have come to the conclusion that you don't need to be cut, your actually quite a good writer.

I'll settle for an over night suspension, as long as you don't post another article before 6 a.m tomorrow where cool.

Also Gretzky's 50 goals in 39 games is the most unbreakable record in sports with Jimmie Johnson's 5 straight championship's a close second, I'll give Cal 3rd.

hey scott I made a comment about nick diaz and how he feels about the way fights are judged and some how put it in your article instead of the Ellenberger article so help me out and move it to that article for me and also read it... I believe that because of the way people are riding Diaz about his feelings about how fights are judged you can write an article in his defense and find that interview with him and Helwani,, where Diaz talks about japanese judging compared to USA judging because he makes alot of sense in his own crazy way and it would make a great comeback story in Nicks defense check it out

Scott, sorry it took so long to get back to you... The draft is the day before UFC-140 so you have plenty of time. I've done a couple of these & they are awesome (like we need any additional motivation to root for a fighter !!!)

Just email your list of 50 UFC-only to md1020@hotmail.com and you're in

P.S. I'm requesting team names also since this is getting pretty big & a lot of people have the same first name

    Good Luck,
    Mike D
