1. Why hasn't Pitt been better with all the talent that is seemingly coming in? and 2. Why don't the Pitt fans get behind the team more? Seems like your coach may not be a great coach, but a very good recruiter? Not sure. Is it a team chemistry problem or x's and o's or what? I presume the Pitt fan base has a lot of sports options given the Steelers and Penguins and so the college team suffers. Would be curious to get your thoughts. Nice piece, parts one and two.
Jay,
Thanks for the read and the comment. I especially appreciate fans of rival schools crossing the lines and giving some real positive feedback.
As for the situation, I think it was a combination of two things that have led to a disappointing three years under Wannstedt. I agree that he is actually a good coach, but I think there is an adjustment period for pro coaches who come back to the college game, thats the first reason. Second reason is that there were a ton of holdovers from the Harris era at Pitt. Those players weren't fit for Wanny's system but, being upperclassmen, had the experience to earn starting spots. Now that the roster is filled with his guys, I think you have begun to see the faster, stronger and more athletic players come out (McCoy, Romeus, Williams) and make an impact. That's why he has been saying since the start to look at 2008, when his first class would be juniors, for the real good things to start coming out of Pitt.
Thanks again for the read and feel free to read more articles and comment. It's great to have you in the community.
