In 1976 or 1977 the Big Ten tried the same thing. Bob Devaney, the AD over Osborne, was violently against it and was quoted in the school newspaper as saying why would we want to do that. I wrote a Letter to the Editor to the Lincoln paper and the Omaha paper saying that the Big Ten was far superior to the Big Eight in academics and that Nebraska could benefit from the association with the Michigan's, Iowa's and Northwestern's of the world. Unfortunately I signed it "Christopher Knowles, Assistant to the Director, Nebraska Department of Water Resources", thinking it would give me more credibility with the papers. Unfortunately they published my name AND my title. I got a very nasty phone call from Bob Devaney himself the next morning at my desk at the office and a chewing out from the Director of the agency! This would be poetic justice.
