I'm an undergraduate student at the University of Leicester in the UK and I am currently conducting my final year research project on the sport of MMA. I'm still trying to decide which direction to take the research and in trying to do some background reading, yours was the only book I could find. Do you know of any other research on the sport or any relevant reading in general, any help would be greatly appreciated, if you could reply to me via e-mail that would also help, ajm78@le.ac.uk. Thanks

I found your article, and as always, enjoyed it greatly, but maybe I am missing the point. Domestic violnce did not begin with MMA. I grew up during the 50's and things like domestic violence and child abuse were not spoken of at that time, but I know both existed. Some feel that was a magic time due to watching Father Knows Best, Donna Reed. Leave it to Beaver and the like. I was the victim of abuse and later an Illinois State Representative Mary Lou Sommers told me that she and her husband a prominent doctor who lived in my neighborhood, strongly suspected what was happening to me, as did the mothers in the PTA at my grade school. She appologized to me saying "you know there just was not anything we could do in those days." That was the truth. My grandmother rescud me, even though it caused a great family rift that existed until the day she died, and long afterwards. Today things are different, but I believe domestic violence may be traced to biblical origins when men misunderstood what it meant for a wife to submit herself to her husband, and missed the part saying to love your wife as Jesus loved the church. For decades men and ministers have felt that men are superior to women because it was God's will. That was long before our modern sportsmen started battering their spouses. Yes football teams bragged about pulling trains on certain girls after games when Iwas young. And I got in between my girlfriend Jan and many men who tried to abuse her up until the day she died from mysterious circumstances. But she, as with many other women, sought out those relationships time after time and I was not there to save her on many occasions. There is much more to this phenomenon of abuse and it goes much deeper than sports. I am proud that MMA fighters are willing to get involved to help prevent the problem and hope they continue to do so--that could be the best thing to come out of the sport.

I tried to find the article and am unable to reference it--I am computer illiterate and always get notes that I have done something incorrectly in trying to find the site.

Thanks David. I was a little surprised that it got the attention that it did and I am grateful of how it turned out.

Thanks for the comment David. I really enjoyed reading your "One World One Dream" piece. Unfortunately, these stories aren't as sexy as the ongoing Favre saga or the million and one rankings/lists on this site but at least we did our part in speaking up a little.

hey

I was just wondering if you heard about the possible Shogun vs. Coleman matchup. I'd like all of the top writers such as yourself to give their opinion on what the outcome will be. Comment what you think will happen.

Thanks!

At least one other MMA writter is doing it, I just can't recall which one. I was going to leave a note on Jen Aniano's page that Herrig is looking for an opponent on Aug 9 for her MMA debut, but I didn't b/c she would make the wrong thing of it and think I was mocking her or something. I actually sponsored a young man in his beginning MMA fights though, and I could have helped Jen if she had taken me seriously and been open to being helped, but oh well. Even if you condense your article I would like to see it here. Just sayin' that's all.

Hi David...I left a comment on your most recent article yesterday, and while I agree that eating disorders amongst male athletes are not covered nearly as much as they are amongst females, I have a something to confess...

Despite my pen name (done for the purpose of maintaining anonymity), I am a girl. Most people who read my articles here think otherwise, which is fine by me. I think I'd lose some of my hockey street-cred if everyone knew that a chick was writing about a very male dominated sport. Guess the cat's out of the bag now...

Anyways, I think my comment on your article makes more sense if its read with the understanding that a female wrote it. Regardless, I thought you did a great job. I always enjoyed exploring the impact competitive sports have on today's young kids in my college classes. Well done.

I just read your dynamite article on MMA Madness about "Lil" bulldog Herrig and loved it so much that I am praying you can reprint it here. Is that a Possibility? I would just love it if you can.
