ok, let me explain the difference. A Mixed Martial Artist includes a wide variety of things. Actors and stuntmen like Jason Statham, Jet Li, Tony Ja are also considered mixed martial artists with the work they do in choreography. There are even types of dancing that are considered a martial art. Mixed Martial Arts fighters: The guys you typically see in the UFC, Pride Strikeforce. MMA fighters are generally a subcategory of Mixed Martial Artists. That is the difference betweent the two.

You did say MMA fighter, but you never referred to Machida a one. You called him a mixed martial artist.
