Bill Stewart was both the first American to Referee in the NHL as well as to Coach and General manage an NHL team to a Stanley Cup, 1938, Chicago Blackhawks. Bill Stewart broke Bill Chadwick in as a referee in Montreal. I know because Bill Chadwick told me.
