About Joseph »

J. C. Sirimarco (aka J. Cheever Loophole, Rufus T. Firefly, Joe Cool, The WiseGuy and a whole slew of other nicknames) is basically a literate, semi-smart, aging but still rabid sports fan who has been around a while. While his expertise is generally in the sport of baseball, having played the game for 27 years, he is a rather analytical mind who has learned much about a number of other sports and is as well-versed to write, comment, pontificate, etc., as anyone else who is not a professional.

Born and raised in Black & Gold Country (that's western Pennsylvania, for those of you who attended public school in the last 30 years or so), but now living in the Seattle area, he has earned BS degrees in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, and an MBA in Finance. And as anyone who has earned an MBA can tell you, nobody earns an MBA in this nation without being able to write (and write, and write, and write and....).

So, while his writing may be the greatest thing since peanut butter and chocolate, or the worst thing since liver and onions, you can always count on him to be opinionated, blunt, direct, sometimes entertaining, and basically General George S. Patton without the profanity.

And, of course, you can count on him to be an eternal, undying fan of all sports Pittsburgh, while also being the one of the most critical commentators of his beloved Pittsburgh teams that there is.

The Shortlist »

  • Favorite Athletes

Only two in my entire life: Roberto Clemente and Willie Stargell.

  • Favorite Sports Teams

Pittsburgh Steelers, Pittsburgh Penguins, Pittsburgh Pirates, AC Milan Rossoneri, Chelsea Blues

  • Favorite Coaches

    Anybody not named Bruce Arians.

  • All Time Sports Moment

Me hitting into a double-play on a knuckleball thrown behind my head. Only quantum mechanics can explain that one.

  • Most Memorable Game Attended

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. St. Louis Cardinals, July 4, 1971, Three Rivers Stadium, Pittsburgh. It was Ball Day, and also Father and Son Day. Willie Stargell hit three home runs in a doubleheader, and I sat three rows behind two nuns wearing full habit and baseball gloves on an 85-degree day. One of the nuns caught a foul ball that bounced off of the second-deck facade behind us. Outstanding catch.

  • Most Unbreakable Sports Record

    (1) Harvey Haddix pitching 12 perfect innings against the Milwaukee Braves in 1959. (2) 511 wins by Cy Young.

  • Ruth or Mays?

Babe Ruth. Willie Mays couldn't throw a curve ball (or eat nearly as many hot dogs).

  • Unitas or Montana?

Johnny U., the greatest quarterback of all time.

  • Jordan or Russell?

    Bill Russell

  • Gretzky or Orr?

Mario Lemieux. Gretzky was made better by the people around him.

  • Pele or Maradona?

Lionel Messi (he doesn't use his hands to score goals).

  • Federer or Sampras?

Rod Laver. Did Federer or Sampras win all four Grand Slam singles titles in a single year twice?

  • Tiger or Nicklaus?

Jack Nicklaus. Tiger is too hotheaded and annoying.

  • Petty or Earnhardt?

    The King, of course.

  • Schumacher or Senna?

A better question: Ginger or Mary Ann?

  • Pac 10, Big 12, Big 10, SEC, ACC, or Big East?

NCAA Division I-A (what is now idiotically called FBS) conference football is all but worthless.
