Michael Schumacher Throws Down...Thank You Jesus!

Nestor to his son Antilochos;
"Lean yourself over your polished car...A little to the left of your steeds;
Call to your right hand horse and goad him on, and slacken with your hands his reins.
Then let the left hand horse swerve close around the turning post,
So that the nave of well made wheel may seem to reach the stone's edge;
But avoid to graze it!"
O gawd...I can think of two dozen teams that would love to be 10-2.
So...what was it in 1984 that got you sooo excited about NASCAR that made you a fan for the next quarter century?
Mike Taylor replied…
A number of things: the speed, the competiveness, the personalities, etc. I'm a huge fan of...

Kinda swamped so sorry for the lag...
I'd agree completely re James and company b/c, like it or not, the sabermetric school of thought is certainly gaining (gained) a foothold in the established MLB power structure.
Re Biggio/Bagwell—Biggio is a no-brainer as far as I'm concerned. Any guy who can put that kind of career together after starting out behind the dish is a Baseball God.
Bagwell is as well, but I think he'll have a harder time due to the Steroid Era stigma/inflation of offensive numbers.
However, I'll gladly endorse any guy who put up as amazing a career as he cobbled together while absolutely terrorizing the Giants. He was One of Those Guys....

EXCELLENT link LJ - thanks for posting this. I'm not too proud to say a tear...
One must assume that your title is mis-stated. There is Ruth...and there is the rest.
Steven Resnick replied…
My title was no mis-stated. I never considered Ruth has the greatest hitter of all-time. I...
So...I had a thought.
You read enough Baseball stuff in your lifetime, you have family , long lived family, that has watched, read and yakked Baseball since the first pitch was tossed underhand in anger, and pretty soon you start 'arguing' and somebody throws a number down that was only relevant before the 'war' (whichever one...) or a number so out of left field it makes you pause in wonder for a second. The war of numbers escalates exponentially over the years.
I have come to regard Bill James and his spawn some of the most important people ever born.
And my thought was...Biggio and Bagwell, what an amazing run they had. What amazing numbers they put up.
I'd add them to my HoF ballot next year.
