Nathan's Bio

Nathan is an avid baseball fan. A Southern Illinoisan by birth, he is a graduate of Southern Illinois University (Carbondale) and the University of Missouri-Columbia. He is currently a doctoral student with a keen interest in sports history, particularly the relationship between professional baseball and American alcohol and drug abuse.

He likes cheap beer, charcoal burgers, and sunny days spent by the radio dialing up a ball game. Other passions include punk music, movies, cartoons, dystopian novels and American essayists/humorists in the mold of Mark Twain, James Thurber and E.B. White.

He is happily married with one beautiful daughter and a dog named Boston.

The Short List facts and information about Nathan Corzine

Favorite Athletes

These days, I'm not sure I play favorites with athletes all that much. Most of my faves are long since retired. They include: Rich Gossage (Hall of Fame '08!), Jack Clark, Ray Lankford, Tim Raines (second greatest leadoff man of all time!), Kevin McHale, Mark Aguirre, Sidney Moncrief, Dave Krieg, Al Toon, Brian Sipe, Bernie Kosar, Ron Francis, Al MacInnis, Johan Cruyff (Total Football!), Alan Shearer (#9 - the "Shirt of Legends"). If I have a favorite player today, it is probably Kansas City Royals pitcher Brian Bannister.

Favorite Sports Teams

In baseball there are a few teams I'm inclined to cheer for. More than a few I'm inclined to cheer against. For me, the "Big Three" are my beloved St. Louis Cardinals, the Pittsburgh Pirates, and the Kansas City Royals. In pro football I like the Green Bay Packers and Cleveland Browns. In other sports I'm partial to the: St. Louis Blues, Boston Celtics, Newcastle United FC, the Netherlands national football team ("Holland" or [Clockwork] "Oranje"), Missouri Tigers, and SIUC Salukis.

All Time Sports Moment

From a personal perspective it would be probably be Yadier Molina's home run in the 2006 NLCS - followed by Wainwright buckling Carlos Beltran's knees! Taking a longer view, there are just too many choices. Nothing quite raises the hair on the back of my neck like watching Secretariat blow away records - and competition - at the '73 Belmont Stakes to take the Triple Crown.

Most Memorable Game Attended

July 4, 1999 at Busch Stadium to see the Cardinals host the Arizona Diamondbacks. We sat in "Big Mac Land", Mark McGwire obliged with a home run to dead center, and it was unbelievably hot. I spent more time shelling out cash to a bottle water vendor than watching the game -- the Cards took it on the chin, 17-5. I think I barely avoided heat stroke. I now make a point to attend night games during the summer.

Most Unbreakable Sports Record

Ripken's 2,632 consecutive games.

Ruth or Mays?

Mays. Ruth might be the greatest player of all time, but there was something aesthetically superior about Mays. He was a primal force of nature, fast, violent, beautiful compared to Ruth, a nearly fictional, Brobdingnagian, sort of character.

Unitas or Montana?

Unitas. My wife is a Colts fan. No offense to Joe Cool, but the guy with the high tops and hunched shoulders straddled - and defined - a football era. If pro football truly is America's national sporting passion, Johnny U. was there at the birth...

Pele or Maradona?

Maradona - in spite of the drugs and the Hand of God.

Pac 10, Big 12, Big 10, SEC, ACC, or Big East?

Missouri Valley Conference!
