My first memory of Notre Dame in my lifetime was when Frank Leahy brought his lads (that's what Leahy called them) from Chicago on the South Shore. It must have been the 1949 season, and I would have been 3, because they won the National Championship and there were 1000 people at the corner of Michigan St. and LaSalle Ave. where the NIPSCO office is. That is where the South Shore station was at that time. I was being held by my cousin and lost one of my shoes. I remember crying and wanting to get my shoe but the crowd and the excitement of seeing the team prevented that.
That was my first of many memories of Notre Dame football.
