Michael's Bio

Michael Felder is a "retired" college football player who still loves the game. He brings the same attention to detail, student of the game approach to his writing that he brought to the field as an undersized scrappy safety for the UNC Tar Heels.

Since he didn't so much play as he practiced, observation is natural to Michael. His ability to break down and interpret film helps him see inside the game and deliver the findings in a way casual fans and experts can truly appreciate.

Michael has had multiple articles, including several installments of his "2008 Battle at the Top" series featured on SI.com's Campusclicks.

Although Michael's writing is rooted in college football, he's an avid follower of the NBA, NFL, MLB, NCAA baseball and NCAA basketball (he went to Carolina how could he not). His experiences in the arena help him bridge the ever growing gap between fans and the players they love or love to hate.

Hey man just wanted to get hold of you before the season started. Hope you got the email from Ricky, I think hes got a lot of good ideas for the community. I was thinking it would be a good idea for us to do a pregame story, maybe come out on thursday, then a post game story on like Sunday.

I think youd be great at the post game analysis stuff since you actually go to play and be on the team. I'm sure you have much better knowledge of the game than I do!

Just hit me back up and let me know what you think; I'm sure by the end of the season we'll have a lot more members in the UNC family.

Yeah, I did see that. Munroe is a huge loss. Curtis now looks to be done playing forever; that's a sad story.

And with Jerimy Finch headed out, and now Dee Finley didn't qualify, it's a mess for the Gators.

Any injury to a DB could be the season.

We'll see what Urban does.

Michael, thanks for the support on the overrated coaches article. The Domers are flying off the handle. As for Ricky Jean-Francois, he can play end or tackle and is a beast physically. He blocked a field goal against Ohio State. If he isn't a knucklehead and gets his grades together, he could turn himself into a first rounder.

Michael what years did you go to UNC? Hilee and Cameron are from my hometown and I know them both pretty well, Hilee had a hell of a season this year. Cant wait for the season this year.

Don't worry, I'm one of the few true supporters of Boeckman and I only hope for the best for him! I really do think he deserves to be a more respected QB because he works very hard but just seems to choke in game time.

I wish Ty the best, think his timing couldn't have been worse and am sad that instead of extending a helping hand (or even some sympathy) Carolina fans are already distancing themselves from him. As much as they'd like him to go pro now, I can't imagine this helping his draft status. Thanks for the info.

Dallas, Phoenix or Houston would be great situations for Ty.

What I don't understand is, if you're not a super elite lottery pick, why wouldn't you want to play for a contender?

I know it's about money but on some level it's also about winning and if Ty fell to Western Conference playoff team, why would he come back?

Personally, I'm hoping he goes. Injury aside, he's ready. If you've mastered PG for Roy Williams, it's time.

You hit the nail on the head. College football is THE cash cow right now. What the basketball-only minded people in Chapel Hill miss is that in the 21st Century, great football makes basketball even better.

Florida anyone?

I just hope the football team can get it going enough that I can watch national telecasts instead of trying to make out the action on ESPN 360!

Thanks for the info on Lawson and Green. I think Lawson's a Top 20 pick. I know he had some health issues last year, but he's so friggin' fast. He's fast for the NBA. PG is a position most organizations are going to be patient with--there's so much to learn.

I'll have to find that Observer article on Green online--I'm in Hoosierland.

I know you didn't say anything about Ellington, but I understand that if he's not a first rounder, he's coming back.

I saw on your profile that you played football for the Heels. Congrats. No matter how it turned out, you can always say you played D-I football.

Let's keep our fingers crossed that Butch Davis can get the program back to prominence. I think he's on his way and it's about time we threw some money at a big-time coach. I don't know what your situation was while you played there but the program's been down too long and I agree, that the football team doesn't get enough pub.

Thanks Michael! I feel it's a travesty that, like you said, flashiness sells. (Those aren't your words but I can't recall the word you used.) Basketball was created below the rim but the big men (George Mikan, Wilt Chamberlain, Bill Russell) brought it above the rim because they were tall enough to! The athletic players (George Gervin, Doc, Michael, etc.) took it to new heights because they could and they worked to get there; not because it was God given with height. That's where the NBA has grown!

The WNBA has flashy passes but no fancy dunks for the women who can dunk (The Big Girls in LA and a select few others). They can but they can't get high enough for flash. But if you want to see fundamentally flashy passes and amazing shots, watch the WNBA or women's college ball! I'll definitely be watching this year with Candace Parker now in the "Women's Association"!!

Michael, great article! It was smart and articulate. It was, however, a bit lengthy. You may want to look into breaking it up into two articles. Maybe one focusing on each sport. Keep up the great work!
