Australian Rules Football (AFL) is my first love and whilst we remain together, notching up our 28th anniversary this year I often cheat on him with all the other sports across the world that are called Football. Luckily he understands and I have escaped an appearance on Jerry Springer.
I have been an avid fan of tennis, netball and basketball since I first learned to play them as a youngster. I marvelled at Andre Agassi and Steffi Graff and was absolutely delighted when they hooked up! The Aussie v NZ netball rivalry is one of the best in sport, even if it goes unnoticed in countries other than Australia and New Zealand. Michael Jordan was my hero and I loved watching him play. There have been some classy heir apparents but for mine, no one will ever be as good as MJ.
I attended my first Olympic games in Beijing and had a ball. It was there that I realised writing about sport is my destiny. I had fought it as I was concerned about my ability to be impartial and I was concerned about mixing work with pleasure. Now I know if you love your job you never work a day in your life and I would love to make a living from writing about sport. As for impartiality, hey I’m a professional!!
I have a journalism degree and spent three months earlier this year (2009) plying my trade in Ghana. I was lucky enough to have photographed the World Cup Qualifier between Ghana and Benin from the pitch. There was only one goal that night and it came within the first 15 seconds of the game. I missed it! It was then that I shelved any dreams of becoming a sports photographer. Those guys have my utmost respect.
I'm excited by the opportunities that this site can bring if you're willing to work hard enough and as sport and writing are my passions I look forward to contributing some good words as often as I can.
