About Kate »

Australian Rules Football (AFL) is my first love and whilst we remain together, notching up our 28th anniversary this year I often cheat on him with all the other sports across the world that are called Football. Luckily he understands and I have escaped an appearance on Jerry Springer.

I have been an avid fan of tennis, netball and basketball since I first learned to play them as a youngster. I marvelled at Andre Agassi and Steffi Graff and was absolutely delighted when they hooked up! The Aussie v NZ netball rivalry is one of the best in sport, even if it goes unnoticed in countries other than Australia and New Zealand. Michael Jordan was my hero and I loved watching him play. There have been some classy heir apparents but for mine, no one will ever be as good as MJ.

I attended my first Olympic games in Beijing and had a ball. It was there that I realised writing about sport is my destiny. I had fought it as I was concerned about my ability to be impartial and I was concerned about mixing work with pleasure. Now I know if you love your job you never work a day in your life and I would love to make a living from writing about sport. As for impartiality, hey I’m a professional!!

I have a journalism degree and spent three months earlier this year (2009) plying my trade in Ghana. I was lucky enough to have photographed the World Cup Qualifier between Ghana and Benin from the pitch. There was only one goal that night and it came within the first 15 seconds of the game. I missed it! It was then that I shelved any dreams of becoming a sports photographer. Those guys have my utmost respect.

I'm excited by the opportunities that this site can bring if you're willing to work hard enough and as sport and writing are my passions I look forward to contributing some good words as often as I can.

Aghhh too many to mention!!

  • Favorite Sports Teams

Collingwood, Melbourne Storm, Aussie Cricket Team, Liverpool, Patriots, Celtics, Yankees, Rangers (I understand it's a little odd to support teams from both NY and Boston but hey, I'm from Australia!!

  • Favorite Coaches

Mick Malthouse, Craig Bellamy, Rafa Benetiz

  • All Time Sports Moment

Collingwood defied the odds to beat Minor Premier Port Adelaide at home to advance to the 2002 AFL Preliminary Final. The Pies would go on to finish 2nd being beaten by Brisbane in the Grand Final

  • Most Memorable Game Attended

It's too hard to only name 1 so I'm going to give you a top 3... Collingwood defeated reigning Premier Brisbane Lions in round 8 2002 announcing themselves as a true contender. The Pies would go on to finish 2nd being beaten by Brisbane in the Grand Final. Steph Rice winning Gold in the 200m IM at Beijing, the first time I have heard Advance Australia Fair at the Olympics! The Italian national anthem being sung after Federica Pellegrini won gold in world record time for the 400m freestyle at the 2009 Swimming World Champs in Rome.

  • Most Unbreakable Sports Record

AFL: Tony Lockett 1360 career goals

I couldn't really say but I'm swaying towards Ruth

  • Jordan or Russell?

Russell is a legend but Jordan was the Man and one of my all time favourite athletes

  • Gretzky or Orr?

    Gretzky

  • Pele or Maradona?

Maradona because of the hand of God!! The English fans I encountered at the 3rd test in Birmingham deserve that one!!

  • Federer or Sampras?

Federer has to win now that he has all 4 slams but Rafa has the jump on him and may well be the best by the time he retires.

  • Tiger or Nicklaus?

Tiger is a household name even when that household doesn't know golf so for mine, Tiger has it.

  • Petty or Earnhardt?

I've got more study to do...

  • Schumacher or Senna?

Schumacher for the same reason as Tiger

  • Pac 10, Big 12, Big 10, SEC, ACC, or Big East?

    Lots more study...
