Ben Gross has been a sports reporter for the Northern Star since the fall of 2005. He has also freelanced for the Chicago Sun-Times, the Aurora Beacon and the Freeport Journal-Standard.

While at the Northern Star Ben has covered sports such as football, men's and women's basketball, baseball, volleyball, softball and men's soccer. Starting in 2006 Ben became part of the Northern Star's football beat. In 2007 he became the lead beat writer.

During his time at the Northern Star Ben has worked events such as the 2006 Poinsettia Bowl, the 2008 Independence Bowl and NIU vs. Iowa at Solider Field. Ben has also had the chance to interview athletes such as Doug Flutie, Larry English, Garrett Wolfe and Doug Free; along with sports broadcasters like Pat Hughes and Dave Kaplan.

Ben has also won multiple awards from the ICPA for his investigative stories on college bowl game financials, his player features, commentary and news stories.
