Matthew's Bio

I am from Orlando, Florida and was raised as an avid University of Miami Hurricanes fan. I now attend the University of Missouri where I am a freshman enrolled in the Journalism School and am studying to become a sportswriter. I do, of course, support my school in all sports, especially football this year, but I am still a die-hard Canes fan at heart.

Growing up I played just about every sport, but I focused on soccer and tennis in high school. I enjoy watching all sports, so I will be covering a wide variety of events in my stories.

Currently, I work for my student TV station, MUTV 23Sports, and write for the student newspaper, The Maneater.

University of Miami Hurricanes (especially football), all University of Missouri teams, and AC Milan.

All Time Sports Moment

For me, it would have to be watching the 2001 college football national championship game that saw the Hurricanes dominate Nebraska 37-14. That Miami team was so stacked and it was so gratifying to see the Canes handle the Cornhuskers in the Rose Bowl after Eric Crouch won the Heisman, which should have gone to Ken Dorsey that year.

Most Memorable Game Attended

2003 Hurricanes game at the Orange Bowl against West Virginia. Miami won 22-20, scoring only one touchdown in the game. But freshman Jon Peattie kicked five field goals, including the game winner with less than 10 seconds to go. Terrible part of the game: seeing Frank Gore injure his knee and going out for the season again. Great part of the game: Kellen Winslow Jr.’s 18-yard catch falling backwards on 4th and 13.

Most Unbreakable Sports Record

Margaret Court’s record of 24 Grand Slam tennis singles titles. Pete Sampras holds the men’s record with 14, still 10 behind Court. That is a record that, especially with the depth in both the men’s and women’s games these days, will not be broken.

Ruth or Mays?

I’m not much of a baseball fan, but I know that Mays meant so much to the game, so I’d have to go with Mays.

Unitas or Montana?

I’m not really old enough to judge between the two, but I’ve seen plenty of highlights. Based on those, I’d have to go with Montana. The offense on those 49ers teams was unreal, so it can’t get much better.

Pele or Maradona?

Pele is still considered the best soccer player ever. While Maradona is in the discussion, Ronaldo is another who’s being considered in the same sentence. But still, Pele is the king of the world’s sport, so I have to go with Pele. And though Argentina and Brazil are the most formidable South American soccer countries, Brazil has always been the foremost international powerhouse in the soccer world.

Pac 10, Big 12, Big 10, SEC, ACC, or Big East?

Growing up in the South and being raised an avid Canes fan, it has to be the ACC. To be honest, SEC football is the best, but they don’t have the Canes. All around, it’s definitely the ACC.

    I enjoyed your article on Miami's QB situation. Very informative and deep. Cool that you got to see that dude light up your high school. Anyway, I am a huge New York Football Giants fan and I was wondering what you thought of Kenny Phillips? Any insight would be appreciated.

    I appreciate your feedback on my editing; it's always good to have a second pair of eyes go through the edited articles and correct the potential mistakes I have made.

    I have gone through what you have edited, and I can say that both of us are correct on the edits. For example, you can say "the most fun" and "the funnest", either way is good. Also, semifinals can be written with or without a dash (at official Wimbledon website, it's written without a dash, whereas at Euro 2008 website, it's written with a dash).
